Personal life

Alia Bhatt has been married to actor Ranbir Kapoor since 2022. They have a daughter, Raha, who was born in November that year.

Bhatt has spoken about dealing with online criticism connected to nepotism in the Hindi film industry. In 2024, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

From Sangharsh to Student of the Year

Bhatt was born into a film family. Her father is filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and her mother is actress Soni Razdan. She attended Jamnabai Narsee School and left school after completing the twelfth grade to pursue acting. Her older sister is Shaheen Bhatt, and her half-siblings include Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt.

She made her first screen appearance as a child in Sangharsh (1999), playing the younger version of Preity Zinta's character. Her first leading role came in Karan Johar's Student of the Year (2012), alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. Bhatt auditioned alongside about 500 girls and lost 16 kilograms in three months after being cast.

Breakthrough performances in Highway, Udta Punjab and Raazi

After the mixed critical response to Student of the Year, Bhatt pursued more demanding roles. In Imtiaz Ali's Highway (2014), she played a wealthy young woman who develops a bond with her captor after being abducted. The performance won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and established her as a performer capable of handling emotionally difficult material.

She followed the film with leading roles in 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, both released in 2014. Her performance as a migrant worker in Udta Punjab (2016) marked a departure from her earlier romantic roles. She also appeared in Dear Zindagi that year, playing a young woman who seeks help from a therapist portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan.

In Raazi (2018), Bhatt played Sehmat Khan, a Kashmiri woman who becomes an undercover spy after marrying a Pakistani army officer. The film was shot in 48 days, and Bhatt won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance.

Gully Boy, Gangubai Kathiawadi and international work

Bhatt starred opposite Ranveer Singh in Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy (2019), a musical drama inspired by the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy. She attended acting workshops and learned Bambaiya Hindi to support the role. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and earned Bhatt another Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Her 2022 performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi brought her the National Film Award for Best Actress, shared with Kriti Sanon. She also appeared in the Telugu-language period film RRR, the Netflix black comedy Darlings and Ayan Mukerji's fantasy film Brahmāstra: Part One, Shiva that year.

Bhatt expanded into American cinema with the Netflix spy film Heart of Stone (2023), co-starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. She played a computer hacker and performed action sequences for the first time. Her later film roles included Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023) and Jigra (2024), for which she also served as a co-producer.

Singing, production and entrepreneurship

Bhatt has performed playback vocals for several film songs. She sang "Sooha Saaha" for Highway after receiving training at A. R. Rahman's music school, and recorded the unplugged version of "Samjhawan" for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. She also sang versions of "Ikk Kudi" for Udta Punjab and "Chal Kudiye" for Jigra with Diljit Dosanjh.

She founded the production company Eternal Sunshine Productions in 2019. The Netflix film Darlings was her first production venture, while Jigra was co-produced by Eternal Sunshine Productions and Dharma Productions. She also served as an executive producer on the crime drama series Poacher.

Bhatt launched the ecological initiative CoExist in 2017 to raise awareness about the welfare of street animals. She later launched Ed-a-Mamma, a sustainable clothing brand for maternity and children's wear, and wrote the children's picture book Ed Finds a Home.
