Shane Gillis

Gillis was born to Phil and Joan Gillis and grew up in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, with two older sisters, Kait and Sarah. In 2023, he relocated from New York City to Austin, Texas. He cited the city's club circuit, particularly around Joe Rogan's Comedy Mothership, and the absence of state income tax.

He dated social media influencer Grace Brassel beginning in July 2024. The couple attended public events together, including a College Football Playoff game and the ESPY Awards, before separating in 2025. Gillis supports Philadelphia sports teams and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.

Gillis played football as an offensive tackle at Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Standing 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, he was recruited to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He left the academy after a few weeks.

He transferred to Elon University in North Carolina to play football. College did not fit him. He dropped out, returned to Pennsylvania to live with his parents, and attended community college before earning a history degree from West Chester University. He sold Honda cars in Mechanicsburg and taught English in Spain for six months before shifting his focus to comedy.

Gillis started performing stand-up in 2012 across central Pennsylvania clubs. He moved to Philadelphia, living near University City with comic Matt McCusker. He placed third in Helium Comedy Club's Philly's Phunniest tournament in 2015 and won the contest the following year.

In 2016, Gillis and McCusker launched Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast. The project became the most subscribed-to podcast on Patreon. Regular appearances on The Bonfire and regional club touring expanded his audience. By 2019, Comedy Central named him an "Up Next" talent, and the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal featured him as a "New Face."

Saturday Night Live announced Gillis as a new cast member on September 12, 2019. Hours after the announcement, critics circulated clips from a 2018 podcast episode featuring anti-Asian slurs and offensive remarks about other minority groups. Public outcry followed immediately.

Gillis stated the jokes were misunderstood context from bad comedic attempts. Four days later, NBC dropped him from the cast. Producer Lorne Michaels later indicated that network executives forced the decision. Gillis returned to Studio 8H to host the show in February 2024, opening with a monologue that directly referenced the controversy, and hosted a second time in March 2025.

Gillis teamed up with filmmaker John McKeever in December 2020 to launch the digital sketch series Gilly and Keeves. The show featured sketches including impressions of Donald Trump. He released his self-funded debut special, Shane Gillis: Live in Austin, on YouTube in September 2021.

Netflix picked up his 2023 special Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs, produced under his and McKeever's Dad Sick Productions banner. The collaboration led to Tires, a scripted comedy set in an auto repair shop. Netflix ordered the series from their YouTube pilot and renewed it ahead of its May 2024 launch. Gillis also booked feature film roles in Nic Pizzolatto's Easy's Waltz and the biographical film Madden.
