MaRynn Taylor

Taylor began performing as a child, staging small performances for her family at about four years old with a plastic microphone. At age 12, she performed onstage for the first time at a sixth-grade talent show and later began singing at summer festivals. She grew up in Rockford, Michigan, listening to country artists such as Garth Brooks, John Denver, Trisha Yearwood, and The Chicks, while also becoming a devoted fan of Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and Hannah Montana.

At 15, Taylor won the Cherry Idol competition at Michigan’s Traverse City National Cherry Festival after an earlier unsuccessful audition. The victory encouraged her to pursue music seriously. She moved to Nashville in 2019 after finishing high school, having first developed an interest in songwriting through poems and stories she wrote as a child.

Taylor’s path to Black River Entertainment began at CMA Fest, where she discovered the company’s “60 Second Spotlight” opportunity. She was initially turned away because she was not yet 18, but, five days before her birthday, she persuaded the organizers to let her perform. Black River Entertainment president Gordan Kerry and vice president Doug Johnson heard her sing and invited her to the company’s suite at Nissan Stadium.

Black River Entertainment subsequently helped Taylor develop her songwriting and recording skills through its summer music camp. She released “Dads and Daughters” in 2020, and the song became a fan favorite after gaining attention on TikTok. Her 2022 single “Every Single Summer” drew on her memories of growing up in small-town Michigan, while “Lies of My Fears” introduced a more vulnerable side of her songwriting.

“Small Town Spinnin’” reflects Taylor’s Rockford upbringing, incorporating local details such as the Ferris wheel at the town’s annual Start of Summer Celebration. Co-written with Erin Kinsey and Josh Kerr, the song explores how gossip moves through a small town and turns private experiences into public conversation. Taylor described the track’s electric guitars as having a Y2K-inspired sound rooted in the 2000s country music she grew up hearing.

The song appeared alongside other personal material on the five-song EP Get To Know Me. The title track is based on a real-life situation and was described by Taylor as her most vulnerable song. Other tracks include “Running Away With You,” “We Could Be In Love Right Now,” and “How It’s Gonna Go.” She wrote the songs with collaborators including Josh Kerr, Barry Dean, Erin Kinsey, McCall Chapin, Robyn Dell’Unto, Jason Earley, and Parker Welling.

Taylor made her Grand Ole Opry debut on June 23, 2023, and returned to the stage several weeks later. She performed “‘01,” a song framed as an ode and apology to her younger self. Her Opry invitation came after Jeannie Seely surprised her with it during an appearance on 650 AM WSM’s Coffee, Country & Cody.

Taylor’s self-titled album MaRynn followed Get To Know Me as a 12-song collection produced by Josh Kerr. She wrote most of the album while traveling as the opening act on Kelsea Ballerini’s arena tour, co-writing all but one of its tracks. The album includes “same girl same,” “season 2 of friends,” and “dirty blonde,” and continues Taylor’s focus on coming-of-age experiences, vulnerability, and personal storytelling.
