Hugh Jackman

Jackman married Australian actress and producer Deborra-Lee Furness in April 1996, having met on the set of the Australian television series Correlli the previous year. After experiencing fertility challenges and miscarriages, the couple adopted two children, Oscar and Ava. In September 2023, Jackman and Furness announced their separation, and their divorce was finalized in 2025. Following their separation, Jackman entered a relationship with his Broadway co-star Sutton Foster.

Jackman was raised in Sydney in a devout Christian household by his father after his parents divorced when he was eight years old. In his adult life, he has integrated daily Transcendental Meditation into his routine, supporting programs that bring meditation to individuals affected by trauma. Jackman has also been treated for basal-cell carcinoma on multiple occasions, frequently using his public platform to advocate for skin cancer screenings and regular sunscreen use.

Jackman was born in Sydney to English immigrant parents. After attending Knox Grammar School, where he starred in a school production of My Fair Lady, he spent a gap year working as a physical education teacher at Uppingham School in England. He returned to Australia to study at the University of Technology Sydney, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 1991. After discovering a deep passion for drama during his final year of university, he completed a course at the Actors' Centre in Sydney and turned down a role on the television soap opera Neighbours to pursue formal training at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 1994.

Jackman quickly established himself in Australian stage musicals, playing Gaston in the local production of Beauty and the Beast in 1995 and Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard in 1996. His major international breakthrough in theatre came in 1998, when he starred as Curly McLain in the Royal National Theatre revival of Oklahoma! in London's West End, earning an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.

Jackman achieved worldwide cinematic stardom when he was cast as Wolverine in Bryan Singer's superhero film X-Men (2000), taking over the role after Russell Crowe recommended him for the part. To portray the physically intense character, Jackman studied wolf movements and early Mike Tyson boxing fights, and practiced wearing the character's metal claws in daily life. At 6 feet 2 inches tall, he was significantly taller than the comic book incarnation of Wolverine, requiring filmmakers to employ specific camera angles and platform shoes for his co-stars.

He continued portraying the character across multiple sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, including X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). In 2017, he starred in Logan, which received widespread critical acclaim as one of the finest comic book adaptations produced. Although Logan was billed as his farewell to the role, Jackman returned to play the character alongside Ryan Reynolds in the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine.

Alongside his Hollywood action roles, Jackman built an extensive career in musical theatre. He made his Broadway debut in 2003 playing Australian musician Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz, a performance that won him both the Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2004. He proved a popular host for live award ceremonies, hosting the Tony Awards four times and winning an Emmy Award for his 2004 hosting gig, as well as hosting the 81st Academy Awards in 2009.

Jackman returned to Broadway in dramatic productions such as A Steady Rain (2009) opposite Daniel Craig and The River (2014-2015), and later starred as Harold Hill in the 2021-2023 Broadway revival of The Music Man, which earned him another Tony nomination. On the big screen, his lead performance as Jean Valjean in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables won him a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2017, he played P. T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman, earning a Grammy Award for the film's compilation soundtrack and mounting the global arena concert tour The Man. The Music. The Show. in 2019.

Jackman has sustained a diverse dramatic film career outside of musicals and comic book adaptations. In 2006, he starred as rival magician Robert Angier in Christopher Nolan's mystery thriller The Prestige, portrayed three interconnected characters in Darren Aronofsky's science-fiction romance The Fountain, and appeared in Woody Allen's Scoop. He later played an Australian cattle drover alongside Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's historical epic Australia (2008), a desperate father searching for his missing daughter in Denis Villeneuve's thriller Prisoners (2013), and corrupt school superintendent Frank Tassone in Bad Education (2019).

Beyond acting, Jackman founded Seed Productions in 2005 with his longtime assistant John Palermo. In 2011, inspired by a trip to Ethiopia as an ambassador for World Vision, he established the Laughing Man Coffee company, directing its profits through the Laughing Man Foundation to support educational initiatives, social entrepreneurship, and community development worldwide. In 2019, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for his contributions to the performing arts and global humanitarian advocacy.
