Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber was raised in Stratford, Ontario, by his mother, Pattie Mallette. He learned to play the drums, piano, guitar, and trumpet, and in 2007 placed near the top of a local singing competition. Mallette uploaded a video of his performance to YouTube, followed by additional videos of Bieber singing R&B covers, and the recordings attracted a growing audience.

Scooter Braun discovered Bieber after encountering one of those videos while searching for another singer. Braun invited the 13-year-old Bieber to Atlanta to record demos, where he met Usher and auditioned for him. Usher helped Bieber secure a recording contract, and Bieber signed with Raymond Braun Media Group in 2008 before joining Island Records.

Bieber released his first single, “One Time,” in 2009. His debut EP, My World, followed later that year and became an international success. The project made him the first artist to place seven songs from a debut record on the Billboard Hot 100.

His first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, arrived in 2010 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, “Baby,” featuring Ludacris, reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, while its music video became the first YouTube video to exceed 500 million views. The album's success established Bieber as a global teen idol and expanded the audience that had first found him through social media.

Bieber followed his initial success with My Worlds Acoustic in 2010, the autobiographical book Justin Bieber: First Step 2 Forever: My Story, and the 2011 concert documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. The film combined concert footage with biographical material and became a major international success. His remix album Never Say Never: The Remixes and Christmas album Under the Mistletoe also reached number one in the United States and Canada.

With Believe in 2012 and Believe Acoustic in 2013, Bieber moved toward a more mature musical style. Believe incorporated dance-pop and R&B influences, while the single “Boyfriend” drew comparisons to the polished R&B sound associated with Justin Timberlake. Believe Acoustic became his fifth US number-one album before he turned 19.

Bieber's 2015 album Purpose marked a significant shift away from his early teen-pop image. Its first three singles, “What Do You Mean?”, “Sorry,” and “Love Yourself,” each reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In January 2016, Bieber also became the first artist to occupy the entire top three positions on the UK Singles Chart with those three songs.

The album's EDM-influenced direction was reinforced by “Where Are Ü Now,” a collaboration with Jack Ü, the duo formed by Skrillex and Diplo. The song earned Bieber his first Grammy Award, for Best Dance/Electronic Recording. Later collaborations included Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's “Despacito” remix, DJ Khaled's “I'm the One,” Ed Sheeran's “I Don't Care,” and Dan + Shay's “10,000 Hours,” which won the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Bieber became engaged to model Hailey Baldwin in July 2018 and has been married to her since that year. They held an official wedding ceremony in South Carolina in September 2019. Their son, Jack Blues Bieber, was born in August 2024.

His fifth studio album, Changes, was released in 2020 and debuted at number one in the United States and the United Kingdom. In 2021, Justice also debuted at number one, while “Peaches” became his first song and album to debut simultaneously at number one in the United States. The collaboration “Stay” with the Kid LAROI became another US number-one single and gave Bieber his 100th entry on the Billboard Hot 100. He released SWAG and SWAG II in 2025.

Bieber has spoken publicly about experiencing depression and anxiety during different periods of his career. In his 2020 documentary series Justin Bieber: Seasons, he discussed struggles with addiction and substance use during the early stages of his career.

In January 2020, Bieber announced diagnoses of Lyme disease and infectious mononucleosis. He tested positive for COVID-19 in February 2022. In June 2022, he announced that he had Ramsay Hunt syndrome type 2, which caused paralysis on one side of his face and led to postponed performances and the eventual suspension of the remaining dates of the Justice World Tour.
