Jaylen Brown

Brown was raised in Marietta, Georgia, by his mother, Mechalle Brown, who worked as an educator and emphasized academic achievement and social consciousness. His father, Quenton Marselles Brown, is a former professional heavyweight boxer who won the 2016 WBU World Championship, and his grandfather, Willie Brown, was also a boxer. Brown is related to several professional athletes, including cousins A. J. Bouye, an NFL cornerback, and A. J. Brown, an NFL wide receiver.

Brown is a practicing Muslim, having converted to Islam in 2021, and completed an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca in June 2024. He follows a primarily vegetarian diet and maintains varied personal interests that include chess, philosophy, playing musical instruments, meditation, and anime. In 2024, he attended the Celtics' championship parade and the ESPY Awards accompanied by WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick.

Beyond athletics, Brown has been deeply engaged in education and social entrepreneurship. At age 22, he was elected the youngest vice president in the history of the National Basketball Players Association. In 2019, he became a fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, where he collaborated with the institution to launch the Bridge Program to mentor youth of color pursuing STEM fields. Through his 7uice Foundation and the Boston XChange incubator, Brown has focused on creating economic opportunity and addressing educational inequality.

Brown attended Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, where he developed into one of the top high school players in the United States. As a junior, he averaged 24.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. During his senior campaign in 2014-15, he averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds, leading Wheeler to a 30-3 record and the Georgia High School Association Class 6A state title. In the championship game, Brown made two game-winning free throws with 0.6 seconds remaining to clinch a 59-58 victory. He was recognized as Georgia's Mr. Basketball and the Gatorade Georgia Boys Player of the Year, and won a gold medal with the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team at the 2014 FIBA Americas Championship.

Rated a five-star recruit, Brown committed to the University of California, Berkeley, to play under head coach Cuonzo Martin. During his first semester, he took a master's-level course in Berkeley's Cultural Studies of Sport in Education program. In his lone collegiate season (2015-16), Brown averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists across 34 games. He was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and received Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors before declaring for the NBA draft.

Brown was selected by the Boston Celtics with the third overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. He entered the league without an agent, opting instead to build his own advisory team. In his rookie campaign, he helped Boston secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. Alongside Jayson Tatum, who was drafted the following year, Brown established himself as a central pillar of the Celtics' lineup, making deep playoff runs that included multiple appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Brown earned his first NBA All-Star selection in 2021 after averaging a then-career-high 24.7 points per game. In 2022, he helped lead Boston to the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors, scoring 34 points in Game 6. In July 2023, after earning All-NBA Second Team honors, Brown signed a five-year supermax extension with the Celtics that was the largest contract in NBA history at the time.

During the 2023-24 season, Brown played a pivotal role on a Celtics squad that finished with a league-best 64-18 record. He was named the Eastern Conference Finals MVP after averaging 29.8 points per game in a four-game sweep of the Indiana Pacers. Boston then defeated the Dallas Mavericks in five games to win the 2024 NBA Finals, where Brown was awarded the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP after averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game while serving as the primary defender against Luka Doncic.

In the 2025-26 season, with Tatum sidelined for most of the year by injury, Brown took on primary scoring responsibilities. He recorded career-high averages of 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, matched his career high with a 50-point game against the Los Angeles Clippers, and earned his second All-NBA Second Team selection.

On July 6, 2026, the Boston Celtics traded Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two future first-round draft picks, and two second-round picks. The move concluded Brown's ten-year tenure in Boston, during which he helped guide the franchise to six Eastern Conference Finals, two NBA Finals appearances, and the 2024 NBA title.
