Dwayne Johnson is an American actor and professional wrestler known for playing Luke Hobbs in the Fast & Furious franchise and Maui in Disney's Moana. As The Rock, he became one of WWE's biggest stars and won multiple world championships. He later expanded into television, film production, football ownership, and other business ventures.

Personal life

Dwayne Johnson was first married to Dany Garcia, whom he met while they were students at the University of Miami. They married in 1997, separated amicably in 2007, and finalized their divorce in 2008. They have one daughter, Simone.

Johnson has been married to Lauren Hashian since 2019. They have two daughters, Jasmine and Tiana. Johnson has also spoken publicly about experiencing episodes of depression beginning during his college years and has advocated openness about mental-health struggles.

Johnson identifies as both Black and Samoan. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a Black Nova Scotian wrestler, while his mother, Ata Fitisemanu, is Samoan. His maternal grandfather, Peter Maivia, was a professional wrestler, and Johnson is a non-blood relative of the Anoaʻi wrestling family.

From football to professional wrestling

Johnson initially pursued football rather than wrestling. He played defensive tackle at the University of Miami and was a member of the 1991 national championship team, although he was mostly a backup behind players including Warren Sapp. He graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of General Studies and dual majors in criminology and physiology.

After briefly joining the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, Johnson was cut during the 1995 season. His father helped him secure a contract with the World Wrestling Federation in 1996, and he received additional training from Pat Patterson and Tom Prichard.

Johnson first wrestled under the name Flex Kavana and won the USWA World Tag Team Championship twice with Bart Sawyer. He then joined the WWF as Rocky Maivia, a ring name combining elements of his father Rocky Johnson's and grandfather Peter Maivia's names.

The Rock and WWE superstardom

Rocky Maivia won the WWF Intercontinental Championship in February 1997, but fans soon rejected the heavily promoted clean-cut character. After recovering from a knee injury, Johnson returned as an outspoken villain, joined the Nation of Domination, and began referring to himself as The Rock. The change helped establish the charismatic, confrontational persona that made him a major WWF attraction.

Johnson won his first WWF Championship in 1998 and went on to become a 10-time world champion across WWE-recognized titles. He also won the 2000 Royal Rumble, captured the Intercontinental Championship twice, became a five-time tag team champion, and was recognized as WWE's sixth Triple Crown champion.

His major WWE rivalries included programs with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, Mankind, Hulk Hogan, Kurt Angle, and John Cena. His partnership with Mankind as the Rock 'n' Sock Connection produced three WWF Tag Team Championship reigns and the highly rated "This Is Your Life" segment. Johnson defeated Austin at WrestleMania XIX in 2003, which became Austin's final match until his later return.

Johnson returned to WWE as a part-time performer in 2011 and defeated John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania XXVIII. He later won the WWE Championship for a record-setting seventh time in 2013, then lost the title to Cena at WrestleMania 29. After announcing his wrestling retirement in 2019, he returned in 2024 as The Final Boss and joined Roman Reigns in the WrestleMania XL storyline.

From *The Mummy Returns* to *The Smashing Machine*

Johnson's first major film appearance was in The Mummy Returns in 2001, where he played Mathayus, the Scorpion King. He then took the leading role in The Scorpion King in 2002, followed by The Rundown and Walking Tall. In 2004, he left wrestling to focus on acting full-time.

His mainstream film career grew through action, comedy, and family films. He played Luke Hobbs in Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Other notable roles included The Game Plan, Tooth Fairy, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Hercules, San Andreas, Central Intelligence, Baywatch, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Jungle Cruise, and Red Notice.

Johnson voiced Maui in Moana, reprised the role in Moana 2, and played the title character in DC's Black Adam. He also produced and starred in the HBO series Ballers and appeared in the autobiographical sitcom Young Rock.

In The Smashing Machine, Johnson portrayed former MMA fighter Mark Kerr in a dramatic performance directed by Benny Safdie. The film received a standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival, and critics highlighted Johnson's move toward a more serious acting style.

Production, football, and philanthropy

Johnson founded Seven Bucks Productions in 2012 and has produced projects including Fighting with My Family, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Jungle Cruise, Red Notice, and Young Rock. He also co-owned the XFL with Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital Partners. The XFL later merged with the United States Football League to form the United Football League.

In 2024, Johnson joined the board of TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of WWE and UFC, and obtained full ownership of the trademarked name The Rock. He has also hosted The Titan Games and created the fitness-focused Project Rock partnership with Under Armour.

Johnson founded the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation in 2006 to support at-risk and terminally ill children. He has worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and supported relief efforts following Hurricane Harvey and the Hawaii floods. He and Oprah Winfrey also created the People's Fund of Maui after the 2023 Hawaii wildfires.
