Triple H

Levesque dated fellow professional wrestler Joan Laurer, known in WWE as Chyna, from 1996 until 2000. In 2000, an on-screen romantic storyline with Stephanie McMahon developed into a real relationship off-camera. The couple married in Sleepy Hollow, New York, on October 25, 2003, making Levesque an in-law of the McMahon wrestling family. Together, they have three daughters.

Outside of wrestling, Levesque is a dedicated fan of the heavy metal band Motorhead, whose frontman Lemmy Kilmister became a close personal friend. Motorhead recorded three separate entrance themes for him throughout his career, and Levesque spoke at Kilmister's memorial service in January 2016. He is also an avid supporter of the English football club West Ham United.

In September 2021, Levesque suffered severe heart failure stemming from viral pneumonia and an underlying genetic heart condition. After doctors discovered fluid accumulation in his lungs and around his heart, he underwent emergency medical treatment at Yale New Haven Hospital, where an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) was installed in his chest. The medical scare prompted his formal retirement from wrestling competition in 2022. In 2025, he was appointed vice chair of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.

Paul Michael Levesque grew up in Nashua, New Hampshire, where he developed a passion for bodybuilding at age 14, inspired by watching wrestlers such as Chief Jay Strongbow. In 1988, at age 19, he won the Teenage Mr. New Hampshire bodybuilding title. While working as a gym manager in Nashua, he met powerlifter Ted Arcidi, who connected him with legendary wrestler and trainer Killer Kowalski.

Levesque began training at Kowalski's wrestling school in Malden, Massachusetts, in 1990, alongside future peers such as Perry Saturn and Chyna. He made his professional in-ring debut on March 24, 1992, competing under the ring name Terra Ryzing for Kowalski's International Wrestling Federation (IWF), where he captured the IWF Heavyweight Championship later that year.

In early 1994, Levesque signed with World Championship Wrestling (WCW). After briefly continuing with the Terra Ryzing persona, he was repackaged as an aristocratic French-Canadian named Jean-Paul Levesque. During his WCW run, he formed a tag team with Lord Steven Regal, beginning a lifelong professional partnership, and started using the Pedigree as his primary finishing move before departing the promotion in early 1995.

Levesque debuted in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in April 1995 as the snobbish aristocrat Hunter Hearst Helmsley, a ring name soon shortened to Triple H. Backstage, he became a core member of The Kliq, an influential backstage group that included Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Sean Waltman. He won the 1997 King of the Ring tournament and captured the WWF Intercontinental Championship, cementing his place on the main roster.

In late 1997, Triple H co-founded the rebellious stable D-Generation X (DX) with Shawn Michaels, Chyna, and Rick Rude. DX revolutionized WWF programming during the Attitude Era through crude humor, anti-establishment promos, and the popularization of the 'crotch chop' taunt and catchphrase 'Suck It.' When Michaels took an extended hiatus in 1998 following a back injury, Triple H took leadership of the group, integrating the New Age Outlaws and X-Pac into a massively popular fan-favorite unit.

Triple H ascended into the main-event picture in 1999, capturing his first WWF Championship from Mankind on Raw Is War. Later that year, he formed an on-screen power alliance known as The McMahon-Helmsley Faction alongside Stephanie McMahon, establishing him as one of the most prominent villainous figures in the industry.

After returning from a severe quadriceps tear suffered in May 2001, Triple H won the 2002 Royal Rumble match and defeated Chris Jericho at WrestleMania X8 to become Undisputed WWF Champion. In September 2002, Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff awarded him the newly introduced World Heavyweight Championship, making him the inaugural holder of the title.

In early 2003, Triple H formed the dominant faction Evolution alongside veteran Ric Flair and rising stars Randy Orton and Batista. The group controlled the main storylines on the Raw brand, culminating at the 2003 Armageddon event where all four members simultaneously held championships. Triple H's reign at the top of the card helped launch both Orton and Batista into legitimate main-event stardom as they eventually broke away from the faction.

Throughout the 2000s, Triple H accumulated numerous world titles, engaged in celebrated rivalries with Shawn Michaels, The Rock, and Kurt Angle, and reunited DX with Michaels in 2006 and 2009. By 2009, he had captured his eighth WWE Championship, establishing a company record at the time.

In 2013, Triple H embraced an on-screen corporate villain persona, creating The Authority alongside Stephanie McMahon. The Authority also employed The Shield and later backed Seth Rollins as the hand-picked champion of the corporate administration.

As his in-ring schedule became more selective, Triple H won the 2016 Royal Rumble match to secure his 14th world title before headlining WrestleMania 32 against Roman Reigns. His subsequent marquee matches included confrontations with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 33, a mixed tag bout pairing with Stephanie against Ronda Rousey and Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 34, and a final pay-per-view singles match against Randy Orton in 2019.

Following his 2021 cardiac emergency, Levesque announced his definitive retirement from active competition in March 2022. During the opening of WrestleMania 38 in April 2022, he entered the ring, thanked the fans, and ceremonially left his wrestling boots in the center of the ring to conclude his in-ring career.

Levesque began taking on formal corporate responsibilities in 2010, starting as an Executive Senior Advisor at WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. In 2012, he founded NXT as WWE's developmental brand, transforming it from a traditional training system into a globally recognized third brand known for workrate, international scouting, and elevated treatment of women's wrestling.

In July 2022, Levesque was appointed WWE's Head of Creative, and by September 2022, he was named Chief Content Officer. In this executive capacity, he oversees creative writing, talent relations, live events, and talent development. Following the acquisition of WWE by Endeavor in 2023, he retained full oversight of creative operations across all flagship programming.

In recognition of his contributions, Levesque was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019 as a founding member of D-Generation X, followed by an individual induction in 2025.
