
Tom Welling is an American actor known for playing Clark Kent in the superhero drama Smallville. He also appeared as Marcus Pierce/Cain in Lucifer, starred in films including Cheaper by the Dozen and Draft Day, and directed and produced television projects.
Personal life
Tom Welling was married to model Jamie White from July 5, 2002, until their divorce was finalized in 2015. They married on Martha’s Vineyard, and Welling and White lived in Vancouver while he was filming Smallville before returning to Los Angeles in 2011.
Welling has been married to equestrian and Saddle Club founder Jessica Rose Lee since November 30, 2019. They have two sons, Thomson Wylde Welling and Rocklin Von Welling.
From construction and modeling to acting
After graduating from Okemos High School in Michigan, Welling worked in construction. He was discovered for modeling in 1998 and later worked on campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch, Calvin Klein, Dior, and Thomas Burberry. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2000 while pursuing acting.
Welling made his first major television appearance in 2001 as karate instructor Rob Meltzer on Judging Amy. He also appeared in episodes of Special Unit 2 and Undeclared. His modeling work included an appearance in the May 2008 issue of Vogue and a role as Angela Via’s love interest in the 2000 music video “Picture Perfect.”
Smallville and directing
Welling was chosen to play Clark Kent in Smallville after a nationwide search. He initially turned down the role twice, then accepted it after reading the script and developing a connection with the character. The pilot aired in 2001 and attracted 8.4 million viewers, making it the highest-rated debut in The WB’s history.
He played Clark Kent throughout all ten seasons of Smallville and received two Teen Choice Awards for the role, including Choice Breakout Star in 2002 and Choice TV Actor in the action-adventure category in 2009. He later reprised the character in the 2019 Batwoman episode connected to the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover.
Welling began directing Smallville with the 2006 episode “Fragile.” He subsequently directed “Hydro,” “Apocalypse,” “Injustice,” “Absolute Justice,” “Patriot,” and “Booster.” He became a co-executive producer during the ninth season and a full executive producer during the tenth and final season.
Film and later television roles
Welling made his feature-film debut as Charlie Baker in Cheaper by the Dozen in 2003 and reprised the role in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 in 2005. He also played Nick Castle in The Fog, Secret Service agent Roy Kellerman in Parkland, quarterback Brian Drew in Draft Day, and Dr. Ryan McCarthy in The Choice.
He returned to regular television in the third season of Lucifer, playing police lieutenant Marcus Pierce, who is revealed to be the immortal Cain. His later roles included Vincent Corbo in Professionals and Samuel Campbell in The Winchesters.
In 2010, Welling served as an executive producer of the CW series Hellcats. In 2022, he and Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum launched the podcast Talkville, on which they discuss episodes of Smallville.
