Rod Wave has twin daughters with his longtime on-and-off girlfriend, Kelsey "Dee" Coleman. His family, childhood, relationships, and emotional experiences have also influenced the subjects of his lyrics.

He has kept much of his personal life private while discussing selected aspects of it through his music and social media.

Rodarius Marcell Green grew up in Saint Petersburg, Florida. His parents separated during his elementary-school years, and his father, Rodney "Fatz" Green, was incarcerated. Green later spent time in juvenile detention and became involved in illegal activity before changing direction.

After his father's release, Fatz encouraged him to focus on music and bought him a microphone. Green's brother contributed a computer, giving him the equipment to record. He performed at school, attended Lakewood High School, and began releasing mixtapes before taking music seriously as a career.

Green began releasing mixtapes in the mid-2010s, including Rookie of the Year and the Hunger Games series. He signed with Alamo Records in 2018 and released the mixtape PTSD in 2019.

The song "Heart on Ice" became his breakthrough after gaining momentum on YouTube and TikTok. It reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, helping establish Rod Wave nationally. He later performed as a supporting act on Kevin Gates's I'm Him Tour, and Gates executive produced Rod Wave's debut studio album, Ghetto Gospel, which reached number 10 on the Billboard 200.

Rod Wave released Pray 4 Love in 2020. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, while "Rags2Riches" reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its deluxe edition included guest appearances from Yo Gotti and Lil Baby.

His next three studio albums, SoulFly (2021), Beautiful Mind (2022), and Nostalgia (2023), each debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. SoulFly marked his first chart-topping album, while Nostalgia remained at number one for two weeks and included the singles "Street Runner" and "Tombstone," both of which reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.

His sixth studio album, Last Lap, was released in 2024 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. It became his seventh consecutive top-ten album and continued a run of annual top-ten albums beginning in 2019.

Rod Wave combines singing and rapping with a style rooted in hip-hop, contemporary R&B, soul, and trap. His songs often address pain, heartbreak, family, depression, and hardship, and he has described music as a form of therapy. His melodic delivery and emotionally direct writing have led to his association with the term "trap-soul."

He has cited Tupac Shakur, Adele, Kanye West, E-40, Boosie Badazz, Chief Keef, Kodak Black, Kevin Gates, and Ed Sheeran among his influences or favorite artists. He has also used samples from recordings by New Edition, Hank Williams Jr., and Paramore.
