Regina Hall

Around 2004, Hall's mother, Ruby Hall, was diagnosed with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease. Hall became an active supporter of the Scleroderma Research Foundation and helped connect her mother with medical care through actress Dana Delany and the late Bob Saget, whose sister had died from the disease.

At age 40, Hall unsuccessfully pursued becoming a Catholic nun after a breakup. She had first considered entering religious life at age 14, but the order she approached had a cutoff age of 39.

Hall was born in Washington, D.C., to Odie Hall, a contractor, and Ruby Hall, a teacher. She graduated from Fordham University in 1992 and earned a master's degree in journalism from New York University in 1997.

She initially envisioned a career in writing or journalism. After her father's sudden death from a stroke during her first semester of graduate school, she completed her studies and began moving toward entertainment. Hall appeared in her first television commercial in 1997, at age 26, after starting with a role on the soap opera Loving and guest appearances on New York Undercover.

Hall made her film debut as Candace "Candy" Sparks in The Best Man in 1999. She followed it with appearances in Love & Basketball and Disappearing Acts, both of which featured Sanaa Lathan. Hall and Lathan later appeared together in The Best Man, Love & Basketball, and Disappearing Acts.

Her breakthrough came with Scary Movie in 2000, in which she played Brenda Meeks. Hall reprised the role in Scary Movie 2, Scary Movie 3, and Scary Movie 4, making Brenda one of her best-known characters. She also gained television recognition as Corretta Lipp on Ally McBeal, where a recurring part became a main role during the show's fifth season.

Hall's film credits expanded with Paid in Full, Malibu's Most Wanted, The Honeymooners, First Sunday, Law Abiding Citizen, and Think Like a Man. She returned as Candace Sparks in The Best Man Holiday and played Candace Hall in Think Like a Man Too. In About Last Night, she co-starred with Kevin Hart, with whom she was praised for having a strong comedic dynamic.

In 2017, Hall appeared in Girls Trip alongside Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish. She followed the film with roles in The Hate U Give and Little. Her performance as Lisa Conroy in Andrew Bujalski's Support the Girls earned her the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in 2018, making her the first African-American winner of that award.

Through her production company, RH Negative, Hall signed a first-look deal with Showtime in 2020 to develop and produce television projects. Her company later signed a six-film deal with ViacomCBS. Hall also signed a first-look agreement with MGM Alternative in 2024 to develop and produce unscripted projects in true crime, ensemble docuseries, and game-show formats.

She served as a producer or executive producer on projects including Little, Black Monday, Master, Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul., and Gonzo Girl. Hall starred in and produced Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. opposite Sterling K. Brown, and starred in and executive produced Master.

Her television credits include Law & Order: Los Angeles, Black Monday, Nine Perfect Strangers, and The Best Man: The Final Chapters. In 2022, she co-hosted the 94th Academy Awards with Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.
