Monica Lewinsky

Monica Samille Lewinsky was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in the Brentwood and Beverly Hills neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Her father, Bernard Lewinsky, is an oncologist whose parents were German Jews who emigrated through El Salvador, and her mother, Marcia Lewis, is an author. Her parents divorced in 1988.

Lewinsky attended the John Thomas Dye School in Bel-Air, Beverly Hills High School, and Bel Air Prep, graduating in 1991. She subsequently attended Santa Monica College before transferring to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1995.

In July 1995, Lewinsky began an unpaid internship in Washington, D.C., working in the office of White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta. In December 1995, she moved into a paid position in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. Between November 1995 and March 1997, Lewinsky and President Bill Clinton engaged in nine sexual encounters in the Oval Office. In April 1996, her superiors transferred her to the Pentagon as an assistant to spokesman Kenneth Bacon over concerns regarding the amount of time she spent with the president.

At the Pentagon, Lewinsky confided details of the relationship to coworker Linda Tripp. Beginning in late 1997, Tripp secretly recorded their phone calls and eventually handed the tapes over to Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr, who was investigating the Whitewater matter. The recordings became evidence in Starr's expanded inquiry into whether Clinton had committed perjury or obstruction of justice during discovery for the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit.

News of the affair broke in January 1998, leading to an intense media frenzy and a public denial by Clinton. Lewinsky spent weeks secluded at her mother's apartment at the Watergate complex to avoid paparazzi and press attention. In July 1998, after she provided physical evidence, including a blue dress stained with Clinton's semen, Lewinsky received transactional immunity and delivered testimony before a federal grand jury. The scandal culminated in Clinton's impeachment by the House of Representatives later that year and his subsequent acquittal by the Senate in 1999.

In March 1999, Lewinsky collaborated with author Andrew Morton on the biographical book Monica's Story and participated in a televised interview with Barbara Walters on ABC's 20/20, which was viewed by an estimated 70 million Americans. Later that year, she launched The Real Monica, Inc., designing a line of reversible tote bags that were sold online and in department stores.

Lewinsky continued working in media and commercial roles over the next several years. She served as an advertising spokesperson for Jenny Craig in early 2000, hosted the television travel series Monica's Postcards for Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, and hosted the reality dating program Mr. Personality on the Fox network in 2003.

Seeking greater privacy and an opportunity to shift careers, Lewinsky relocated to the United Kingdom in 2005 to attend the London School of Economics. In December 2006, she graduated with a Master of Science degree in social psychology after completing a thesis titled "In Search of the Impartial Juror: An Exploration of the Third-Person Effect and Pre-Trial Publicity." Following her graduation, she lived quietly across London, Los Angeles, New York, and Portland while remaining largely out of public view.

Lewinsky returned to public life in May 2014 by publishing an essay titled "Shame and Survival" in Vanity Fair, where she reflected on the culture of public humiliation and addressed her past experiences. The essay marked the start of her role as a regular contributing writer for the publication. Driven by the 2010 suicide of college student Tyler Clementi, she began focusing her public work on anti-bullying and anti-harassment initiatives.

In March 2015, Lewinsky delivered a TED talk titled "The Price of Shame," which advocated for a more compassionate internet culture. She later became a strategic advisor and ambassador for the anti-bullying organization Bystander Revolution, gave keynote speeches at international conferences, and contributed the foreword to the 2017 book Shame Nation: The Global Epidemic of Online Hate.

Her later work expanded into film and television production. Lewinsky served as a producer on Impeachment: American Crime Story, the 2021 FX anthology series dramatizing the 1990s scandal, working closely with actress Beanie Feldstein, who portrayed her. In 2021, she established the production company Alt Ending Productions, signing a first-look agreement with 20th Television, and served as executive producer on the HBO Max documentary 15 Minutes of Shame. In February 2025, she expanded into audio broadcasting by launching the interview podcast Reclaiming.
