Teen pop breakthrough and early acting roles
Moore began performing the national anthem at sporting events in the Orlando area as a child and became known as the "National Anthem Girl." At 13, she was overheard singing while recording a demo in an Orlando studio. The connection led to a record deal with Sony's 550 Music and Epic Records. She toured with NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys before releasing her debut single, "Candy," in 1999.
Her debut album, So Real, was released that year and received platinum certification in the United States. Its follow-up, I Wanna Be With You, included the title song, which became her first top-40 single on the Billboard Hot 100. She later released the albums Mandy Moore and Coverage, the latter consisting primarily of covers of songs from the 1970s and 1980s.
Moore began acting in feature films with a voice role in Dr. Dolittle 2 and a supporting role as Lana Thomas in The Princess Diaries, in which she appeared alongside Anne Hathaway. Her first leading film role was Jamie Sullivan in A Walk to Remember (2002), a performance that earned her the MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Female Performance. She subsequently appeared in How to Deal, Chasing Liberty, Saved!, and American Dreamz.
Tangled and This Is Us
Moore voiced Rapunzel in Disney's animated musical Tangled (2010), co-starring vocally with Zachary Levi. She and Levi performed "I See the Light," which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. Moore later reprised Rapunzel in Tangled Ever After, Tangled: The Series, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and other Disney projects.
Her television work during this period included appearances in Grey's Anatomy, Tron: Uprising, Sheriff Callie's Wild West, and Red Band Society. She also had a guest role as herself in Entourage and appeared in Scrubs and The Simpsons.
In 2016, Moore began playing Rebecca Pearson in the NBC family drama This Is Us. Her performance brought Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Award nominations, while she shared two Screen Actors Guild Awards with the show's ensemble. The series ran through 2022.
Return to music and later work
After releasing Amanda Leigh in 2009, Moore returned to recording with Silver Landings in 2020, her first studio album in more than a decade. She followed it with In Real Life in 2022. Her later music moved further from the bubblegum pop style associated with her early career toward singer-songwriter material.
Moore's later screen credits include the films 47 Meters Down, The Darkest Minds, and Midway. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 25, 2019, and received the inaugural Lifetime of Culture Award at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards in 2024.
