Chrissy Metz earned an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations playing Kate Pearson on NBC's drama This Is Us. Before landing the role, the American actress spent over a decade working in minor television parts and as a talent agent's assistant in Los Angeles. She expanded into film with Breakthrough and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, alongside performances in television specials and stage productions.

Personal life

Metz married British journalist Martyn Eaden in January 2008 at a Santa Barbara courthouse. The couple separated in 2013, and their divorce was finalized in December 2015.

She dated camera grip Josh Stancil between 2016 and 2018 after meeting him on the set of This Is Us. She was later in a relationship with composer Hal Rosenfeld from 2018 to 2020.

In 2020, Metz met songwriter Bradley Collins on the dating app Bumble. They dated until 2023 and co-authored the children's book When I Talk to God, I Talk About You during their relationship. Metz is a practicing Christian.

Upbringing and early auditions

Metz was born in Homestead, Florida. Her father served in the US Navy. The family relocated to Japan when she was an infant, living there for several years before her parents divorced. Her mother returned with the children to Gainesville, Florida. She grew up in a blended household alongside four siblings and half-siblings. Her earliest employment was at a local McDonald's.

She discovered performance through choir. At age 22, she accompanied her teenage half-sister to an open talent audition in Gainesville. Metz sang Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" for the scouts. An agent encouraged her to move to Los Angeles immediately.

The initial years in California proved lean. She booked scattered parts on series such as Entourage, All of Us, and My Name Is Earl. To support herself, Metz worked as an assistant for her talent agent. The pressure took a toll. On her 30th birthday, severe panic attacks landed her in an emergency room, prompting her to start therapy and focus on her health.

Breakthrough with *This Is Us*

In 2014, Metz secured a recurring role as Ima Wiggles in FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show. The five-episode arc put her alongside Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange. Even so, steady work remained elusive.

She reached a financial low point in 2016. She had 81 cents left in her bank account when creator Dan Fogelman called to cast her as Kate Pearson on This Is Us. She initially feared the unknown incoming number was a debt collector.

The series became a commercial success. Metz played Kate over six seasons. The cast twice won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. In 2022, she co-wrote an episode during the show's final season.

Film roles, music, and stage

Her television work led to film roles. In 2018, Metz appeared as Trish in Netflix's teen comedy Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. She took the lead in the 2019 drama Breakthrough, playing Joyce Smith and contributing the song "I'm Standing With You" to the soundtrack. She also executive produced and starred in the 2022 independent drama Stay Awake.

Music remained an outlet. Metz sings lead vocals with the band Chrissy and the Vapors. In 2024, she competed as "Poodle Moth" on season eleven of The Masked Singer, advancing to the quarterfinals before elimination. She made her Broadway debut as Angelique in the musical & Juliet at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
