Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia, while his father, Drederick Irving, was playing basketball for the Bulleen Boomers. His mother, Elizabeth Ann Larson Irving, played basketball and volleyball, and the family returned to the United States when Kyrie was about two years old. He has a sister named Asia.

Irving has a daughter named Azurie with Andrea Wilson. He was also in relationships with Breanna Barksdale and singer Kehlani, according to biographical accounts.

Irving became a standout high-school basketball player and helped his team win a state championship during his junior year. He then played for Duke University under coach Mike Krzyzewski, but a persistent toe injury limited him to 11 games during the 2010-11 season.

Despite the shortened college campaign, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Irving first overall in the 2011 NBA draft. He averaged 18.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game during his rookie season and won the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

Irving became an NBA All-Star with the Cavaliers before LeBron James returned to Cleveland in 2014. The two formed the core of a team that reached the NBA Finals in three consecutive seasons. Cleveland lost to the Golden State Warriors in the 2015 Finals after Irving fractured his kneecap in the opening game.

After recovering from surgery, Irving returned during the 2015-16 season and averaged 25.2 points and 4.7 assists per game in the playoffs. In Game 7 of the Finals against Golden State, he hit a decisive three-point shot over Stephen Curry with 53 seconds remaining, helping Cleveland win its first championship in franchise history. That summer, Irving won an Olympic gold medal with the United States at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Irving requested a trade from Cleveland and joined the Boston Celtics in August 2017. A knee injury cut short his first season in Boston, and the Celtics lost to the Cavaliers in the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals. After the 2018-19 season, he signed with the Brooklyn Nets, joining Kevin Durant and later James Harden.

Irving's Nets tenure was affected by injuries and his decision not to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, which made him ineligible to practice or play for part of the 2021-22 season. In October 2022, he shared a link to an anti-Semitic documentary and declined to clearly denounce its views. The Nets suspended him for eight games, and he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in February 2023 after apologizing.

In Dallas, Irving joined Luka Dončić and coach Jason Kidd. Irving and Dončić formed a productive offensive partnership during the 2023-24 season, helping the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals. Dallas lost the series to the Boston Celtics, with Irving averaging 19.8 points per game in the Finals.

After the Mavericks traded Dončić for Anthony Davis during the 2024-25 season, Irving assumed a larger offensive role and led the league in average minutes played for several weeks. In early March, he tore the ACL in his left knee and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
