Jason Statham
Jason Statham is an English actor known for leading action roles in The Transporter, The Expendables, and the Fast & Furious franchise. A former competitive diver and fashion model, he became a major action star after his film debut in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Personal life
Jason Statham has been in a relationship with model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley since 2010, and they announced their engagement in 2016. They have two children, son Jack Oscar and daughter Isabella James.
The family lived in Beverly Hills for several years before moving back to London in 2020.
From competitive diving to modelling
Before acting, Statham helped his father Barry Statham sell inexpensive goods at market stalls while developing interests in martial arts, football, and diving. He joined the British national diving squad and competed for England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games in the 1 metre, 3 metre, and 10 metre events. He was ranked 12th in the world as a platform diver in 1992.
After leaving competitive diving, Statham modelled for brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's, and French Connection. He also appeared as a background dancer in music videos for the Shamen, Erasure, and the Beautiful South. His experiences selling goods on London streets later helped him secure his first film role.
Breakthrough with Guy Ritchie
Statham made his film debut as Bacon in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998). Ritchie was drawn to Statham's experience as a street vendor and asked him to demonstrate the patter of someone selling fake jewellery during his audition. The crime comedy was a commercial success and brought Statham to public attention.
Ritchie cast him again as Turkish in Snatch (2000), a crime comedy featuring Brad Pitt, Benicio Del Toro, and Dennis Farina. Although Statham's part was initially relatively small, it expanded into a central role and established him as an antiheroic screen presence.
The Transporter and action-film stardom
In The Transporter (2002), Statham played Frank Martin, a driver-for-hire who becomes involved in a criminal kidnapping. The film's success led to Transporter 2 (2005) and Transporter 3 (2008), and solidified his reputation as an action star.
He followed the series with leading roles in Crank (2006), The Bank Job (2008), and Death Race (2008), as well as appearances in The Italian Job (2003), Cellular (2004), and War (2007), in which he acted opposite Jet Li. He also played Arthur Bishop in The Mechanic (2011) and Mechanic: Resurrection (2016).
Statham joined the ensemble cast of The Expendables (2010) as Lee Christmas, a former SAS soldier and expert knife fighter. He returned for the film's sequels, including The Expendables 2, The Expendables 3, and Expend4bles.
Fast & Furious, The Meg, and later work
Statham entered the Fast & Furious franchise as Deckard Shaw in a cameo at the end of Fast & Furious 6 (2013). He returned as a major antagonist in Furious 7 (2015) and later appeared in The Fate of the Furious (2017), F9: The Fast Saga (2021), and Fast X (2023). He also co-starred with Dwayne Johnson in the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019).
His other prominent roles include the comedic agent Rick Ford in Spy (2015), former Navy captain Jonas Taylor in The Meg (2018) and Meg 2: The Trench (2023), and Orson Fortune in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023). He reunited with Guy Ritchie for Wrath of Man (2021), playing an armoured-truck driver with a mysterious past, and later starred in The Beekeeper (2024) as Adam Clay.
Statham is known for performing many of his own stunts. He has advocated for a dedicated Academy Award category for stunt performers, and he was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2022, he established the production company Punch Palace Productions.
