Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren has been married to director Taylor Hackford since 1997. They married in Scotland after dating for more than a decade.

Hackford directed White Nights and Love Ranch, in which Mirren appeared. She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003.

Mirren was born Helen Lydia Mironoff in London. Her Russian-born father Anglicized the family surname to Mirren when she was about 10 years old. She was raised in Southend-on-Sea outside London and acted in school productions before joining Britain’s National Youth Theatre at 18.

Her breakthrough came in 1965, when she played Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra with the National Youth Theatre. She was 19 at the time, and the performance led to an agent and a future with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She spent about four years with the RSC, playing roles including Cressida in Troilus and Cressida, Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, and Ophelia in Hamlet.

Mirren later joined Peter Brook’s theatre company and toured Africa and the United States. Her Broadway debut came in 1995 in A Month in the Country, a performance that earned her a Tony Award nomination. She won an Olivier Award and a Tony Award for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience, first in London in 2013 and later on Broadway in 2015.

Mirren’s first released film was A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1968, followed by a major role in Age of Consent in 1969. Her early film work also included The Long Good Friday, Excalibur, and Cal, for which she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. She later appeared in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and played Queen Charlotte in The Madness of King George, earning an Academy Award nomination.

Her performance as housekeeper Mrs. Wilson in Robert Altman’s Gosford Park brought a second Oscar nomination. In Calendar Girls, she played a Yorkshire woman who persuades her friends to pose for a charity calendar. Her most celebrated film role came in Stephen Frears’s The Queen, in which she portrayed Elizabeth II. The performance won her the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

Mirren continued to take on varied roles, including Sofya Tolstoy in The Last Station, Prospera in The Tempest, Maria Altmann in Woman in Gold, and Colonel Katherine Powell in Eye in the Sky. She also played Victoria in Red and Red 2, Queenie in the Fast & Furious franchise, and Golda Meir in Golda. Her later screen credits include Barbie, White Bird, and The Thursday Murder Club.

Mirren became widely known on television as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in the BBC series Prime Suspect. The drama began in 1991 and continued through several installments, including Prime Suspect: The Final Act in 2006. Her performance earned three BAFTA Awards and two Emmy Awards.

She also won Emmy Awards for The Passion of Ayn Rand and Elizabeth I, and received a SAG Award nomination for playing attorney Linda Kenney Baden opposite Al Pacino in the HBO film Phil Spector. In 2019 she played Catherine the Great in the HBO miniseries of the same name.

Her later television work included the science-fiction anthology series Solos and the Yellowstone prequel 1923, in which she played Cara Dutton opposite Harrison Ford. She also appeared in the crime series MobLand.

Mirren’s awards include an Academy Award, multiple BAFTA Awards, Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony Award. Her Academy Award for The Queen was accompanied by major acting honors from BAFTA, the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild.

She received the SAG Life Achievement Award in 2022 and the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 2026. Her autobiography, In the Frame, was published in 2008.
