Carrie Coon

Carrie Coon married actor and playwright Tracy Letts in 2013. They have two children, including a son born in 2018 and a daughter born in 2021.

Coon was pregnant while filming the first season of The Gilded Age.

Coon was born in Copley, Ohio, to Paula and John Coon. She was raised with an older sister, an older brother, and two younger brothers.

She graduated from Copley High School in 1999 and earned a bachelor's degree in English and Spanish from the University of Mount Union in 2003. In 2006, she received a Master of Fine Arts in acting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

After graduate school, Coon joined the Madison Repertory Theatre and made her professional stage debut in Our Town. She later spent four seasons with the American Players Theatre and moved to Chicago in 2008. During this period, she also performed motion-capture work for a Wisconsin video game company.

Coon's breakthrough stage role was Honey in the Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The production traveled from Chicago to Washington, D.C., and then to Broadway, where Coon made her Broadway debut in 2012 opposite Tracy Letts. Her performance earned a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

She continued working in Chicago and New York theater, appearing in Placebo, Mary Page Marlowe, Mary Jane, and Bug. Her performance as Mary Jane earned an Obie Award, a Lucille Lortel Award, and a nomination for a Drama Desk Award. She later reprised her role as Agnes White in Bug on Broadway.

Coon made her television debut in a 2011 episode of The Playboy Club, followed by guest appearances in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Ironside, and Intelligence.

Her major television breakthrough came in 2014, when she was cast as Nora Durst in HBO's The Leftovers. Nora is a woman whose husband, son, and daughter disappear during an unexplained global event. Coon won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for the role and shared the TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Drama for The Leftovers and Fargo.

In the third season of FX's Fargo, Coon played police chief Gloria Burgle and received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. She later played Vera Walker in the second season of The Sinner.

Coon plays Bertha Russell, a wealthy social climber and family matriarch, in HBO's period drama The Gilded Age. The role brought her Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the second and third seasons, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for the ensemble.

In the third season of HBO's The White Lotus, Coon played Laurie Duffy, a divorced lawyer. The performance earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Coon made her film debut in David Fincher's Gone Girl in 2014, playing Margo Dunne, the twin sister of Ben Affleck's character. She followed the role with appearances in The Post, Widows, The Nest, Boston Strangler, and His Three Daughters.

She has also appeared in major film franchises. She provided the voice and motion capture for Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War and returned to the role in Avengers: Endgame. In the Ghostbusters series, she played Callie Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Coon was an executive producer of His Three Daughters and Another Happy Day. She also performed the lead voice role of Bridget Landry in the podcast series Motherhacker.
