Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama grew up in an athletic family in Le Chesnay, near Paris. His father, Félix, competed in track and field in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump. His mother, Élodie de Fautereau, played basketball and coached youth teams. His older sister, Ève, also played professionally. Sports came naturally. He tried football as a goalkeeper and practiced judo before choosing basketball.

His mother taught him the game. At age seven, he joined Entente Le Chesnay Versailles. Nanterre 92 youth coach Michaël Allard spotted him on the bench at an under-11 game in 2013, mistaking the tall child for a coach. Wembanyama entered Nanterre's academy at age ten. At 14, he moved into the club dormitory to balance training and school. He completed his baccalauréat with honors while teaching himself English through online videos.

Wembanyama debuted for Nanterre 92 in the EuroCup on October 29, 2019, at 15 years old. He was the second-youngest player in tournament history. In February 2020, he blocked nine shots in an under-18 Adidas Next Generation Tournament game. He won the French Pro A Best Young Player award in 2021 before moving to ASVEL.

He won a Pro A title with ASVEL despite injuries limiting his playing time. In July 2022, he signed with Metropolitans 92 to train under head coach Vincent Collet. Metropolitans 92 traveled to Nevada in October 2022 for two exhibition games against the NBA G League Ignite. Wembanyama scored 73 points across the series. The games drew wide attention. The NBA arranged to stream Metropolitans 92 games on its mobile app. He finished the campaign as the youngest MVP in Pro A history, leading the league in scoring, rebounds, and blocks.

The San Antonio Spurs selected Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. He was only the second European player selected first overall. In his rookie campaign, he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks. He won the Rookie of the Year award unanimously and made the NBA All-Defensive First Team.

His second season included a 50-point game against the Washington Wizards and his first All-Star selection. In February 2025, doctors found deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The illness ended his season after 46 games. During his recovery, he traveled to China for a ten-day training retreat at the Shaolin Monastery.

He returned for the 2025-26 campaign. He averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks, becoming the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in NBA history. In the playoffs, he led San Antonio past the Oklahoma City Thunder to win Western Conference Finals MVP. The Spurs reached the 2026 NBA Finals, where they fell to the New York Knicks in five games.

Wembanyama earned silver medals at the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship and the 2021 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. In the under-19 tournament, he set a FIBA record by averaging 5.7 blocks per game. He debuted for the senior national team in November 2022 during World Cup qualifiers.

He played for France at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He led the French team with 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. France advanced to the gold medal match against the United States. He scored 26 points in the final as France claimed silver. Tournament officials named him the Olympic Rising Star.
