Tyran Stokes

Stokes was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and began playing basketball competitively as a first grader. He moved to San Diego at age nine, later lived in the Atlanta area, and eventually settled in Napa, California.

As an eighth grader in 2022, Stokes played in the Nike Peach Jam under-16 division for Team WhyNot. He was also one of only two players from the 2026 class invited to the 2023 NBPA Top 100 Camp.

Stokes began his high school career at Prolific Prep, where he earned MaxPreps Freshman All-America honors after averaging 10.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. He later played alongside fellow top recruit AJ Dybantsa and earned MaxPreps Sophomore All-America honors after averaging 13.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game.

He transferred to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks for his junior season. After recovering from wrist surgery, he scored 20 points in his debut and finished the season averaging 21 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He also played high school football for Sherman Oaks, catching two passes for 57 yards and a touchdown in his first game.

Stokes finished his high school career at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, where he teamed up with JJ Crawford. He scored 31 points in his debut and later set a school record with 63 points against West Seattle. During the 2025-26 season, he averaged 31.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game while leading Rainier Beach to a 29-1 record and the Washington 3A state championship.

Stokes became the top-ranked player in the 2026 class after AJ Dybantsa reclassified to the 2025 class. Although Brandon McCoy Jr. briefly moved ahead of him in the 247Sports rankings, Stokes reclaimed the top position after a strong offseason. He was regarded as a consensus five-star recruit across major recruiting services.

His finalists included Kansas, Kentucky, and Oregon after he initially announced a top five of Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Oregon, and USC. Stokes committed to Kansas on April 28, 2026, joining the Jayhawks as their fourth No. 1 recruit signed during Bill Self's tenure.

At Kansas, Stokes wears jersey number 4 and is listed as a guard. He is described as a versatile player who can score, rebound, facilitate, and operate with guard instincts despite his forward-sized frame.

Stokes has won gold medals with the United States at the 2023 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship, the 2024 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, and the 2025 FIBA Under-19 World Cup. At the U16 Americas Championship, he averaged 10.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

He averaged 12.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists at the 2024 U17 World Cup. At the 2025 U19 World Cup, he became the first United States player to record a triple-double in the tournament's history, producing 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists against Jordan.

Stokes was selected for the 2026 McDonald's All-American Game, where he led all players with nine rebounds while adding 12 points, three assists, and two blocked shots. He was also named MVP of the 2026 Jordan Brand Classic after scoring 29 points with eight rebounds, seven assists, and three blocked shots.

He signed a multi-year name, image, and likeness shoe deal with Nike in October 2025 alongside Brandon McCoy Jr. and Aaliyah Chavez. His mother is Keaira Stokes, and he has said that he chose jersey number 4 because several members of his family wore it.
