Taylor Lautner is an American actor and martial artist known for playing the werewolf Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga film series. He also starred as Sharkboy in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D and appeared in Cuckoo, Scream Queens, and Abduction.

Personal life

Taylor Lautner married Taylor Dome on November 11, 2022, at Epoch Estate Wines in California. Before their wedding, Dome planned to take his surname, meaning both partners became known as Taylor Lautner.

In March 2026, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together.

Martial arts and early acting

Lautner began studying karate at the age of six and trained with Michael Chaturantabut, a seven-time world karate champion and the founder of Xtreme Martial Arts. He earned a black belt by the age of eight and won several junior world championships. In the World Karate Association's 12-and-under division, he won the Junior World Forms and Weapons championship and three gold medals. He was also ranked first in the world in several NASKA Black Belt disciplines in 2003.

Chaturantabut encouraged Lautner to audition for acting roles. Lautner and his family initially traveled between Michigan and California for auditions before relocating to the Los Angeles area in 2002. His early credits included The Bernie Mac Show, My Wife and Kids, Summerland, and voice roles in Danny Phantom, Duck Dodgers, and What's New, Scooby-Doo?.

His first major film role was Sharkboy in Robert Rodríguez's The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D in 2005. Rodríguez asked Lautner to choreograph the film's fight scenes after learning about his martial arts training. Lautner also played Eliot Murtaugh in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 that year.

Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga

Lautner was cast as Jacob Black in Twilight after auditioning alongside Kristen Stewart, who played Bella Swan. Jacob's role expanded substantially in the later films as the character became a shapeshifter and a central figure in Bella's love triangle with Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson.

Director Chris Weitz initially considered recasting Lautner for The Twilight Saga: New Moon because Jacob undergoes a major physical transformation. Lautner trained extensively and gained approximately 30 pounds of muscle, leading Weitz and Summit Entertainment to confirm in 2009 that he would return. He played Jacob throughout New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Breaking Dawn Part 2.

The role made Lautner a teen idol alongside Stewart and Pattinson. His performance in the series earned honors including a Scream Award, multiple Teen Choice Awards, a People's Choice Award, and an MTV Movie Award. He also hosted Saturday Night Live in December 2009.

Later film and television roles

During and after the Twilight films, Lautner took roles outside the franchise. He appeared as Willy Harrington in the ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day, played Nathan Harper in the action thriller Abduction, and appeared in Grown Ups 2, Tracers, The Ridiculous 6, and Run the Tide.

Lautner returned to television as Dale Ashbrick Jr. in the BBC sitcom Cuckoo, appearing in three series from 2014 to 2018. He played Dr. Cassidy Cascade in the second season of Ryan Murphy's comedy horror series Scream Queens in 2016.

In 2023, Lautner appeared in the music video for Taylor Swift's song “I Can See You,” alongside Joey King and Presley Cash. He later appeared in Home Team and was attached to the film The Token Groomsman as Scott.
