Brandy Norwood

Brandy Rayana Norwood was born in McComb, Mississippi, and was raised in Carson, California, after her parents relocated there in 1983. She grew up in a Christian and musical household, singing through her father Willie Norwood's church ministry. She performed her first gospel solo, “Jesus Loves Me,” at the age of two, and later identified Whitney Houston as a major inspiration after hearing her sing.

Norwood began appearing in talent competitions and public performances as a child. In 1990, she signed with Teaspoon Productions, where she recorded backing vocals for the R&B group Immature and made a solo demo. She signed with Atlantic Records in 1993, left traditional high school, and continued her education with private tutoring while preparing her debut album.

Norwood's self-titled debut album was released in 1994 and produced the hit singles “I Wanna Be Down,” “Baby,” and “Brokenhearted.” The album reached number 20 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and earned her Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. She also contributed “Sittin' Up in My Room” to the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack and opened for Boyz II Men's national tour in 1995.

Her acting career developed alongside her music. After a role on the sitcom Thea, she became the star of UPN's Moesha in 1996, playing Moesha Mitchell. The series became UPN's most-watched program and ran for six seasons. Norwood's performance earned an NAACP Image Award, establishing her as both a recording artist and a television star.

Norwood's second album, Never Say Never, was released in 1998 and became her biggest-selling album. It included “Have You Ever?” and “The Boy Is Mine,” her duet with Monica. “The Boy Is Mine” spent 13 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Norwood and Monica the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The album reached number two on the Billboard 200 and was followed by the Never Say Never World Tour in 1999.

In 1997, Whitney Houston selected Norwood to play Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, a television musical with a multiracial cast that also included Houston, Whoopi Goldberg, and Jason Alexander. The program attracted an estimated 60 million viewers and made Norwood the first African American woman to portray Cinderella in a major television movie. She later appeared in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Double Platinum, and the voice cast of Osmosis Jones.

Norwood's third album, Full Moon, arrived in 2002 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 while topping the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album blended her established R&B sound with futuristic production, including elements of 2-step garage and electro-funk. Its lead single, “What About Us?,” became an international top-ten hit.

She followed it with Afrodisiac in 2004, an album shaped by collaborations with Timbaland and Kanye West. Its ambient, dub, and breakbeat influences marked a more experimental direction and earned the album some of the strongest critical response of her career. Norwood received an unconditional release from Atlantic Records at the end of 2004, and The Best of Brandy was released in 2005.

Norwood served as a judge on the first season of America's Got Talent in 2006 and later appeared with her brother Ray J and their parents in the reality series Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business. She also competed on the eleventh season of Dancing with the Stars, partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and finished fourth. Her fifth album, Human, was released in 2008 after a four-year musical hiatus.

Norwood returned to R&B with Two Eleven in 2012. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and topped the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Its lead single, “Put It Down,” featuring Chris Brown, became her first top-ten entry on the Billboard R&B and hip-hop songs chart in a decade. During this period, she also appeared in The Game, 90210, Drop Dead Diva, and Tyler Perry's Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.

Norwood made her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago in 2015. Her initial six-week engagement was extended, and she later reprised the role in other productions. In 2017, she and Lana Gordon became the first Black co-leads to play principal roles concurrently in Chicago. Norwood also starred in and co-executive produced the BET sitcom Zoe Ever After in 2016.

Her seventh studio album, B7, was released in 2020 through her own label, Brand Nu Inc., making it her first project as an independent artist. Norwood co-wrote and co-produced most of the album, which debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the UK R&B Albums chart. In the same year, she and Monica appeared in a Verzuz webcast that attracted 1.2 million viewers on Instagram Live alone.

Norwood joined the cast of ABC's music drama Queens in 2021 alongside Naturi Naughton, Eve, and Nadine Velazquez. She played Naomi “Xplicit Lyrics” Harris-Jones, one of four members of a reunited hip-hop group, and recorded new music for the series. She also served as a mentor for John Legend's team on the twentieth season of The Voice and recorded Disney's “Starting Now” for the Ultimate Princess Celebration campaign.

In 2022, Norwood recorded “Nothing Without You,” a duet with her daughter Sy'Rai, for the Cheaper by the Dozen soundtrack. Her eighth album, Christmas with Brandy, was released in 2023 after her return to Motown Records. She also reprised Cinderella in Descendants: The Rise of Red and appeared in the films Best. Christmas. Ever! and The Front Room, where her performance received positive critical attention.

Norwood's voice has been described as soft, raspy, and husky, with some classifications placing her in the contralto range. Her signature technique involves layered harmonies, detailed background vocals, and long, cascading riffs. These qualities contributed to her nickname “The Vocal Bible,” which reflects her influence on later contemporary R&B singers.

Her music has moved from the street-oriented R&B and pop-soul of Brandy to the adult contemporary sound of Never Say Never, the futuristic production of Full Moon, the experimental textures of Afrodisiac, and the R&B-focused approach of Two Eleven. Artists including Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, H.E.R., Miguel, and Erykah Badu have identified Norwood or her music as an influence. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her number 193 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
