Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes was born to Randi Martin and former Major League Baseball pitcher Pat Mahomes Sr., who played for several MLB franchises between 1992 and 2003. He grew up in an athletic environment alongside his brother Jackson and younger half-sister Mia. Outside of football, Mahomes became a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals baseball franchise in July 2020.

Mahomes began dating Brittany Matthews during their sophomore year at Whitehouse High School. Matthews, a former professional soccer player and co-owner of the Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League, became engaged to Mahomes in 2020, and the couple married in March 2022. They have three children: daughter Sterling Skye, son Patrick Lavon III, and daughter Golden Raye.

In 2019, Mahomes established the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and educational resources of underserved youth. He has also used his public platform to speak out against racial injustice, notably urging the NFL to take direct stances against systemic racism.

At Whitehouse High School in Texas, Mahomes was a three-sport athlete competing in football, basketball, and baseball. During his senior baseball season, he pitched a 16-strikeout no-hitter, and he earned recognition as the MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year for 2013-2014 after leading the school to its first district football title. Although the Detroit Tigers selected him in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft, he opted to attend Texas Tech University on a football scholarship.

Playing under head coach Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech, Mahomes appeared in both baseball and football as a freshman before dedicating his focus exclusively to the gridiron. Operating the Red Raiders' high-powered offense, he established an NCAA Division I FBS record for single-game total offense with 819 yards in 2016, a performance in which he also tied the FBS single-game passing mark with 734 yards. Mahomes won the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the nation's top college passer during his junior season, leading the country with 5,052 passing yards before declaring for the NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills to select Mahomes with the tenth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. After spending most of his rookie season behind veteran Alex Smith, Mahomes made his starting debut in the regular season finale against the Denver Broncos, throwing for 284 yards in a victory.

Mahomes took over the starting quarterback role in 2018 and produced an historic campaign. He became only the second quarterback in league history to surpass 5,000 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns in a single season, joining Peyton Manning. His performance earned him the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award, the AP Offensive Player of the Year honor, and first-team All-Pro selection.

During the 2019 season, Mahomes led Kansas City through the postseason, overcoming double-digit deficits in all three playoff matchups. In Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers, he orchestrated a fourth-quarter comeback to secure a 31-20 win, capturing the franchise's first championship in 50 years and earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the youngest quarterback to win the award.

Mahomes guided the Chiefs to additional Super Bowl appearances in 2020 and 2022. During the 2022 campaign, he secured his second NFL MVP award after leading the league with 5,250 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. He capped the season by winning Super Bowl LVII over the Philadelphia Eagles, taking home his second Super Bowl MVP trophy and becoming the first player in the 21st century to claim both awards in the same season.

The following season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a consecutive title in Super Bowl LVIII, defeating the 49ers 25-22 in overtime with a game-winning three-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman. The victory secured his third Super Bowl ring and third Super Bowl MVP award. Throughout these championship runs, Mahomes established a prolific connection with tight end Travis Kelce, breaking the franchise record for most postseason and regular-season touchdown combinations by a quarterback and receiver tandem.

Mahomes holds numerous league efficiency records, becoming the fastest quarterback in NFL history to surpass 20,000, 25,000, 30,000, and 35,000 passing yards, as well as the fastest to throw 200 and 300 career touchdowns.

In 2020, Mahomes signed a landmark 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs. The agreement was subsequently restructured and further extended through 2033, creating a total contract valuation exceeding $504 million, the largest overall deal in NFL history.

During the 2024-25 season, Mahomes helped the Chiefs return to the Super Bowl for a third consecutive year, though they were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles. In the 2025 season, Mahomes set milestones as the youngest quarterback to throw 250 touchdown passes before suffering a knee injury in December against the Los Angeles Chargers that cut his campaign short and prompted offseason rehabilitation.
