Baker Mayfield is an American football player known for quarterbacking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy. The first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he has also played for the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams.

Personal life

Mayfield has been married to Emily Wilkinson since July 2019. They have a daughter, Kova, and a son, Maverick.

Mayfield and Emily run the Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation. The foundation hosts the annual "Be the Ball" event in support of early childhood learning and has also created a scholarship program for underfunded college athletes.

From Lake Travis to Oklahoma

Mayfield was the starting quarterback at Lake Travis High School in Austin, where he posted a 25-2 record over two seasons and led the Cavaliers to the 2011 Class 4A state championship. He chose Texas Tech as a walk-on and became the first walk-on true freshman quarterback to start an FBS season opener.

After one season at Texas Tech, Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma. He sat out the 2014 season under NCAA transfer rules before becoming the Sooners' starter in 2015. He won the Burlsworth Trophy in 2015 and 2016, earned two Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year awards and led Oklahoma to consecutive conference championships.

In 2017, Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy after completing 70.5 percent of his passes for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns. He was the first Heisman winner since the introduction of athletic scholarships in the 1950s to have begun his college career as a walk-on. A Big 12 rule change that restored his eligibility became known as the "Baker Mayfield rule."

First overall pick and Cleveland Browns career

The Cleveland Browns selected Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He entered his first season as a replacement for the injured Tyrod Taylor in Week 3, throwing for 201 yards in a comeback victory over the New York Jets that ended the Browns' 19-game winless streak.

Mayfield finished his rookie season with 3,725 passing yards and 27 touchdown passes, setting an NFL rookie record that stood until Justin Herbert broke it in 2020. He received the 2018 PFWA Rookie of the Year award and was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.

In 2020, Mayfield helped Cleveland finish 11-5, reach the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and win its first playoff game since 1994. The Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round. Mayfield played through a partially torn labrum for much of the 2021 season and underwent surgery after the season ended.

Panthers and Rams in 2022

After Cleveland acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson, Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2022. He competed with Sam Darnold for the starting role, later requested his release and was released by Carolina in December.

The Los Angeles Rams claimed Mayfield off waivers after Matthew Stafford suffered a spinal cord injury. With only two days to learn the Rams' playbook, Mayfield entered his debut against the Las Vegas Raiders after John Wolford was benched. He then led a game-winning 98-yard drive in the fourth quarter, completing 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards and earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Mayfield later described his five-game stint with the Rams as a turning point that restored his enjoyment of football.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback

Mayfield joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023 and became the team's starting quarterback after Tom Brady's retirement. In his first season, he set career highs with 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes, led Tampa Bay to an NFC South title and won his first Pro Bowl selection. He also became the first visiting quarterback to post a perfect passer rating at Lambeau Field.

The Buccaneers won consecutive NFC South titles in Mayfield's first two seasons with the team. In 2024, he established career highs with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, 407 completions and a 71.4 percent completion rate. He became the fourth player in NFL history to record at least 4,000 passing yards, 40 touchdown passes and a completion rate of at least 70 percent in one season.

Mayfield's career postseason passer rating of 105.9 ranks first in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 150 attempts. He is also the only quarterback in Buccaneers history to be selected to multiple Pro Bowls.
