Alexander Ovechkin

Ovechkin married Russian model Anastasia Shubskaya in August 2016. The couple has two sons, Sergei, born in August 2018, and Ilya, born in May 2020. Their eldest son was named in memory of Ovechkin's late older brother Sergei. The family divides time between a residence in McLean, Virginia, and a home outside Moscow.

Outside of sports, Ovechkin pursued higher academic studies in Russia, working toward a Candidate of Sciences degree in pedagogical sciences. He is also known for extensive charitable contributions. In 2006, he established Ovi's Crazy 8's, a community program that donates season tickets to underprivileged children and families. Since 2014, he has served as an ambassador for the American Special Hockey Association, helping athletes with disabilities participate in the sport. In 2025, he partnered with the V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer to raise funds for pediatric cancer research.

Ovechkin was born in Moscow to athletic parents. His mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, was a two-time Olympic gold medalist in basketball for the Soviet Union, and his father, Mikhail, played professional soccer. Ovechkin began playing hockey at an early age, encouraged heavily by his older brother Sergei. When Ovechkin was 10 years old, Sergei died following a car accident, a loss that Ovechkin regularly honors by kissing his glove and pointing upward after scoring.

Rising through the Dynamo Moscow youth system, Ovechkin broke Pavel Bure's club scoring mark by tallying 56 goals as an 11-year-old. He made his professional debut with Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Superleague during the 2001-02 season at age 16. Ovechkin helped Dynamo capture the league championship during the 2004-05 season before transitioning to North America.

Selected first overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL entry draft, Ovechkin made his debut in October 2005. He posted 52 goals and 54 assists in his debut campaign, capturing the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year. During his rookie season, he scored a celebrated goal against the Phoenix Coyotes while sliding onto his back facing away from the net.

In the 2007-08 campaign, Ovechkin led the NHL with 65 goals and 112 points. He became the first player in league history to win four major regular-season honors in a single year: the Art Ross Trophy, the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy, the Hart Memorial Trophy, and the Lester B. Pearson Award. On January 5, 2010, Ovechkin was appointed the 14th captain in Washington Capitals franchise history, becoming the team's first European captain.

After several postseason disappointments in preceding years, Ovechkin guided the Capitals to a historic playoff run in 2018. Washington overcame a series deficit against the Columbus Blue Jackets in the opening round, eliminated the two-time defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, and defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games in the Eastern Conference Final.

In the 2018 Stanley Cup Final, the Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games to win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Ovechkin led all playoff scorers with 15 goals in 24 games, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason most valuable player.

Throughout the 2020s, Ovechkin continued a steady pursuit of the league's all-time scoring benchmarks. He surpassed Dave Andreychuk for the most power-play goals in league history, eclipsed Gordie Howe for the most goals scored with a single franchise, and tied Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy with nine career 50-goal seasons.

On April 6, 2025, Ovechkin scored his 895th regular-season goal in a game against the New York Islanders, surpassing Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer. Later that year, on November 5, 2025, he scored against the St. Louis Blues to become the first player in NHL history to reach 900 regular-season goals.

Ovechkin has represented Russia extensively on the international stage. At the junior level, he won a gold medal at the 2003 World Junior Championships and silver medals in 2002 at the World U18 Championships and 2005 at the World Juniors.

At the senior level, Ovechkin participated in 13 IIHF World Championships, winning gold medals in 2008, 2012, and 2014. He also represented Russia in three consecutive Winter Olympic Games in 2006, 2010, and 2014, earning a spot on the Olympic All-Star Team at the 2006 Games in Turin.
