Mac Jones

Jones grew up in Jacksonville in an athletic family. His father, Gordon Jones, played tennis at Florida State University and Flagler College, won the 1977 NAIA singles and doubles championships, and was inducted into the Flagler Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004. His mother, Holly, also played tennis at Mercer University. His sister, Sarah Jane, played tennis at the College of Charleston, while his brother, Will, played soccer at Mercer University.

Jones attended The Bolles School in Jacksonville, where he played for head coach Corky Rogers. As a junior in 2015, he led Bolles to the state regional final. As a senior in 2016, he guided the school to the Florida 4A title while throwing for 1,532 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also worked as a child model and actor, appearing in commercials, and began volunteering at charitable events at a young age.

Jones originally committed to the University of Kentucky before accepting a scholarship from Alabama. He redshirted in 2017 and saw limited action in 2018, when he threw a 94-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle, then the second-longest touchdown pass in Alabama history. During the 2018 season, Jones and Jalen Hurts were backup quarterback teammates for the Crimson Tide.

Jones became Alabama's starter late in the 2019 season after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending hip injury. He made four starts, threw for 1,503 yards and 14 touchdowns, and led Alabama to a Citrus Bowl victory over Michigan. In 2020, he completed 77.4 percent of his passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and four interceptions. His passer rating and completion percentage set NCAA season records, and he won the Davey O'Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and Manning Award.

Alabama finished the 2020 season unbeaten against an all-conference schedule before defeating Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl semifinal. In the College Football Playoff National Championship against Ohio State, Jones threw five touchdown passes in Alabama's 52-24 victory. He completed his Alabama career with 6,126 passing yards and 56 touchdown passes, earned consensus All-American recognition, and received academic honors after graduating with a 4.00 GPA.

The New England Patriots selected Jones 15th overall in the 2021 NFL draft. He won the starting quarterback job over Cam Newton and became New England's first rookie quarterback to start a season opener since Drew Bledsoe in 1993. Jones led the Patriots to a winning record and a playoff berth during his rookie season, finishing with 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team, finished second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Ja'Marr Chase, and received Pro Bowl honors.

Jones lost the starting job during the 2023 season after repeated benchings and finished that year with 2,120 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Patriots traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024. After Trevor Lawrence was injured, Jones started seven games and earned his first victory as a Jaguar in a 10-6 win over the Tennessee Titans. He ended the season with 1,672 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Jones signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2025. He started eight games while Brock Purdy was injured and led the team to five victories. His 2025 season included a 342-yard, two-touchdown performance in an overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams and a 319-yard, three-touchdown game against the Rams later in the season. He finished the season with 2,151 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
