Brock Purdy is an American football player known for leading the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII. The quarterback became widely known as "Mr. Irrelevant" after being selected with the final pick of the 2022 NFL draft, then taking over as San Francisco's starter during his rookie season.

Personal life

Purdy married Jenna Brandt in March 2024. They have a daughter, Millie Joleen Purdy, who was born in May 2025.

Purdy is a devout Christian and has spoken publicly about the role of Christianity in his life. During his first two NFL seasons, he lived with San Francisco 49ers teammates Nick Zakelj and Alfredo Gutiérrez.

Early life and college

Purdy played high school football at Perry High School in Arizona, where he became the starting varsity quarterback as a sophomore. He led Perry to consecutive state championship appearances in 2016 and 2017, was named Arizona's Gatorade Football Player of the Year, and finished his high school career with a 27-13 record. In 2017, he threw for 4,405 yards and 57 touchdowns despite missing spring football after puncturing his left hand on a saguaro cactus during a paintball outing.

He enrolled at Iowa State University in 2018 and became the starting quarterback during his freshman season. In 2019, he set Iowa State single-season records with 3,982 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns. During the 2020 season, Purdy and running back Breece Hall led the Cyclones to a 9-3 record and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Oregon.

Purdy finished his Iowa State career with 12,170 passing yards and 81 passing touchdowns, along with 1,117 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns. He held 32 school records and graduated in 2021 with a degree in communication studies. His father, Shawn Purdy, played minor league baseball, while his older sister Whittney played softball and his younger brother Chubba became a quarterback.

From "Mr. Irrelevant" to 49ers starter

The San Francisco 49ers selected Purdy with the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 NFL draft, making him that year's "Mr. Irrelevant." He began the season as the team's third-string quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Purdy took over after injuries sidelined Lance and Garoppolo. He won all five regular-season games he started, throwing for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions. He also became the first "Mr. Irrelevant" to throw a touchdown pass in a regular-season game.

In the playoffs, Purdy became the first 49ers rookie quarterback to start and win a postseason game. He guided San Francisco past the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys before suffering a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The 49ers lost that game 31-7.

2023 season and Super Bowl LVIII

Purdy returned as San Francisco's starting quarterback in 2023. He led the NFL in passer rating and yards per pass attempt, earned a Pro Bowl selection, and set the 49ers' single-season records for passing yards and passer rating. He also became the first 49ers quarterback in 23 years to throw for at least 4,000 yards in a season.

In the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, the 49ers trailed 24-7 at halftime. Purdy completed 13 of 16 passes in the second half and helped San Francisco rally to a 34-31 victory. The win made him the lowest-drafted quarterback to start a Super Bowl.

In Super Bowl LVIII, Purdy completed 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown, but the 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22 in overtime. In 2024, he finished with 3,864 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while adding a career-best 323 rushing yards.
