Early television roles

Butters began her career in print and television commercials. Her first speaking role was Gabby Hoffer in a 2014 episode of Criminal Minds.

She went on to play young Cyd Ripley in Best Friends Whenever, Ashley McBride in The Kicks, and Ella in the Amazon Prime Video series Transparent, where she appeared in eight episodes.

American Housewife and the role of Anna-Kat Otto

She played the youngest Otto child for the show's first four seasons and appeared in 90 episodes, working opposite Katy Mixon and Diedrich Bader.

The role of Anna-Kat Otto was subsequently recast with Giselle Eisenberg for the show's fifth season.

Breakthrough in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Butters played Trudi Fraser, a precocious child actress, in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino spotted her on television while developing the film and later cast her after she auditioned for the role.

Her performance brought critical acclaim and earned nominations from several critics' groups, including a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Actor or Actress. She also won the Las Vegas Film Critics Society's Youth in Film award in the female category.

The Gray Man and The Fabelmans

Butters appeared as Claire Fitzroy in the Netflix action film The Gray Man. The role placed her in a story involving Ryan Gosling's character, Six, and Billy Bob Thornton's character, Donald Fitzroy.

She played Reggie Fabelman in Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film The Fabelmans. Reggie was based on Spielberg's sister Anne, and Butters received the role after Spielberg called her on her 12th birthday.

Freakier Friday and later work

In Freakier Friday, Butters played Harper Coleman, the daughter of Lindsay Lohan's character, Anna Coleman, and the granddaughter of Jamie Lee Curtis's character, Tess Coleman. The film marked her first main-character role and reunited her with Lohan in the Disney sequel.

Butters also performed the song "Baby" with Lindsay Lohan for the Freakier Friday soundtrack. Her other later credits include Lily in Queen of Bones, voice work in Monsters at Work and Adventure Time: Distant Lands, and an appearance in The Paper.
