John Stamos

Stamos has been married to Caitlin McHugh since February 2018. They have one son, William Christopher, who is known as Billy. Stamos was previously married to Rebecca Romijn from 1998 until their divorce was finalized in 2005.

He has two younger sisters, Janeen and Alaina. Stamos has also served as a spokesperson for Project Cuddle and as a celebrity ambassador for Childhelp.

Stamos began pursuing acting after growing up working in his father’s restaurants and playing drums in his high school marching band. Although he planned to attend Cypress College, he skipped his first semester to seek acting work. Three weeks later, he was cast as Blackie Parrish on the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital.

Stamos played Blackie from 1982 to 1984 and received Soap Opera Digest Awards for the role. He was also nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He moved into prime-time television with the short-lived sitcom Dreams and later appeared opposite Jack Klugman in You Again?.

In 1987, Stamos began playing Jesse Katsopolis on ABC’s Full House. The motorcycle-riding, Elvis-loving character became his career-defining role as the show followed Jesse, Danny Tanner, and Joey Gladstone as they helped raise Danny’s three daughters. At Stamos’s request, the character’s surname was changed from Cochran to Katsopolis to emphasize his Greek heritage.

Full House ended in 1995 after eight seasons. Stamos later reprised Jesse in the Netflix sequel series Fuller House, on which he also served as an executive producer. His Full House colleagues included Bob Saget, Dave Coulier, Lori Loughlin, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, Andrea Barber, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Stamos played Dr. Tony Gates on ER from 2005 to 2009 after first appearing as the character in a guest role. He later led the Fox sitcom Grandfathered as Jimmy Martino and played Dr. Brock Holt in the second season of Scream Queens. He received a People's Choice Award for Favorite Actor in a New TV Series for Grandfathered.

His other television roles include Dr. Carl Howell on Glee, Connor McClane on Necessary Roughness, and Dr. Nicky on the psychological thriller You. He played Marvyn Korn, a college basketball coach, in the Disney+ series Big Shot and has provided the voice of Tony Stark, or Iron Man, in Spidey and His Amazing Friends.

Stamos made his film debut in Never Too Young to Die and later appeared in Born to Ride, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, and The Little Mermaid Live!. His Broadway credits include J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, the Emcee in Cabaret, Guido Contini in Nine, Albert Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie, and Senator Joseph Cantwell in The Best Man.

Stamos has played drums and other percussion instruments with The Beach Boys since 1985. He performed with the band at concerts, appeared in the music video for their 1988 song “Kokomo,” and played on the 1990 title track for Problem Child.

In 1992, he sang lead vocals on a new version of “Forever,” a song originally written and performed by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. Stamos also recorded with the band’s members and performed on Al Jardine’s solo album A Postcard from California. His other musical work includes the album Shades of Blue and appearances on drums, guitar, bass, and percussion.

Stamos published If You Would Have Told Me: A Memoir in October 2023. The book discusses his struggles with alcoholism, including a 2015 DUI arrest, and his path to sobriety. He has also spoken about sexual abuse he experienced as a child.

His public advocacy has included work with organizations focused on child welfare and abuse prevention. Stamos also hosted episodes of The Grand Scheme podcast series Snatching Sinatra, which featured interviews with Barry Keenan about Keenan’s 1963 kidnapping of Frank Sinatra Jr.
