Jessica Alba is an American actress and model known for playing Max Guevara in the science-fiction series Dark Angel. She also became widely recognized for her roles as Sue Storm in Fantastic Four and Nancy Callahan in Sin City.

Personal life

Jessica Alba married Cash Warren in Los Angeles in May 2008. They have three children: daughters Honor Marie and Haven Garner, and son Hayes Alba. Alba announced their separation in 2025 and filed for divorce that year.

Before her marriage to Warren, Alba was in a relationship with her Dark Angel co-star Michael Weatherly. Weatherly proposed on her 20th birthday, and the couple ended their relationship in 2003.

Early acting and *Dark Angel*

Alba became interested in acting at age five. She won an acting competition in Beverly Hills at age 11, took acting lessons, and was signed by an agent nine months later. Her first feature-film appearance was in Camp Nowhere (1994), where a role initially expected to last two weeks expanded to two months after another actress left the production.

She appeared on television in The Secret World of Alex Mack and played Maya in Flipper from 1995 to 1997. Because Flipper was filmed in Australia, her swimming ability and PADI-certified scuba-diving skills were useful to the production. She later studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company with William H. Macy and David Mamet.

Alba's breakthrough came when James Cameron selected her from more than 1,000 candidates to play Max Guevara, a genetically engineered super-soldier, in Dark Angel. The series ran from 2000 to 2002 and earned her a Golden Globe nomination, a Teen Choice Award for Choice Actress, and a Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television.

From *Honey* to *Fantastic Four* and *Sin City*

Alba made her major film breakthrough as aspiring dancer and choreographer Honey Daniels in Honey (2003). She followed it with prominent roles in Sin City (2005), as the dancer and stripper Nancy Callahan, and Fantastic Four (2005), as Susan Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman. She reprised Susan Storm in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007).

Her other film roles included Into the Blue, Good Luck Chuck, Awake, The Eye, The Love Guru, Valentine's Day, Machete, and Little Fockers. In The Eye, she played a classical violinist who receives an eye transplant and begins experiencing supernatural visions.

Alba became a frequent collaborator with director Robert Rodriguez, appearing in Sin City, Machete, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, Machete Kills, and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. She later starred opposite Jason Statham in Mechanic: Resurrection (2016) and played Nancy McKenna in the television series L.A.'s Finest from 2019 to 2020.

The Honest Company and activism

In 2011, Alba co-founded The Honest Company with Christopher Gavigan. The consumer-goods company sells baby, personal-care, and household products. She expanded the brand with Honest Beauty in 2015 and published The Honest Life in 2013. The book became a New York Times bestseller. Alba stepped down as the company's chief creative officer in 2024.

Alba has supported causes involving child welfare, education, environmental health, and LGBTQ rights. She lobbied Congress in support of the Safe Chemicals Act in 2011 and returned to Capitol Hill in 2015 during debate over chemical-safety legislation. She has also worked with Baby2Baby and served as an ambassador for the 1Goal education initiative.

Family background and health

Alba was born to Catherine Louisa Alba and Mark David Alba, who served in the U.S. Air Force. Her father's career led the family to live in Mississippi and Texas before they settled in Claremont, California, when she was nine. She has a younger brother, Joshua Alba.

During childhood, Alba had pneumonia several times a year, experienced two partially collapsed lungs, and had a ruptured appendix and a tonsillar cyst. She has also had asthma since childhood. She was raised Catholic and later stepped away from organized religion while continuing to express a belief in God.
