Alexis Bledel is an American actress and model known for playing Rory Gilmore in Gilmore Girls and Emily Malek in The Handmaid's Tale. She also appeared in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Sin City, and Tuck Everlasting, and won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in The Handmaid's Tale.

Personal life

Bledel was married to actor Vincent Kartheiser from 2014 to 2022. They met while working together on Mad Men, where Kartheiser played Pete Campbell and Bledel appeared as Beth Dawes. They have one son.

Bledel and Kartheiser maintained a private family life. Their divorce was finalized in August 2022.

Spanish-speaking upbringing and modeling

Bledel grew up in Houston in a Spanish-speaking household. Her mother, Nanette, was raised in Mexico, while her father, Martín Bledel, was born in Argentina. Spanish was her first language, and she learned English after starting school. She identifies as Latina.

Her mother encouraged her to join community theater to help with her shyness. As a child, Bledel performed in local productions of Our Town, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Aladdin. A talent scout later discovered her at a shopping mall, leading to fashion-modeling work in locations including Tokyo, Milan, New York, and Los Angeles.

Bledel was studying film at New York University when she auditioned for Gilmore Girls. She was cast as Rory Gilmore at age 18.

Bledel made her television debut in Gilmore Girls in 2000, playing Rory Gilmore, the academically ambitious daughter of single mother Lorelai Gilmore, portrayed by Lauren Graham. The series ran for seven seasons and 153 episodes, establishing Bledel as a leading young television actress.

The show became known for its fast-paced dialogue and its focus on the relationship between Rory and Lorelai. Bledel reprised Rory in the Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a four-part series released in 2016.

Film roles and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Bledel made her feature-film debut as Winnie Foster in the 2002 Disney adaptation of Tuck Everlasting. She later appeared in the crime thriller Sin City as Becky and played Ryden Malby in the comedy Post Grad.

One of her most prominent film roles was Lena Kaligaris in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and its 2008 sequel. She starred alongside Blake Lively, America Ferrera, and Amber Tamblyn. Other film credits include The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, Violet & Daisy, The Brass Teapot, Parts Per Billion, and Jenny's Wedding.

Mad Men and The Handmaid's Tale

In 2012, Bledel appeared in three episodes of Mad Men as Beth Dawes, the wife of an insurance salesman. The role introduced her to Vincent Kartheiser, who played Pete Campbell on the series.

Bledel joined Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale in 2017 as Ofglen, a character later identified as Emily Malek. Her performance earned her four Primetime Emmy Award nominations and a win for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Her role expanded to a regular part in the second season, and she left the series after its fourth season before returning for a special appearance in the finale.

Theatre, producing, and later projects

Bledel has also worked on stage, appearing in Love, Loss, and What I Wore and the Manhattan Theatre Club production Regrets. She served as a producer on the short film Life Is Short.

Her later screen credits include the television series Us & Them, the film Crypto, and the podcast series The Coldest Case. She is attached to the films Ponderosa and Joy Will Prevail, both listed in post-production.
