Jenn Carter

Jenn Carter was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised around music. Her mother was a musician who taught her songwriting, and Carter grew up listening to artists including Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers.

She began writing and performing music at 11. Her early influences included folk, hip-hop, jazz, and blues, and she later developed an interest in drill rap. She studied music production before returning to Brooklyn to pursue her career and record music in a home studio.

Carter began releasing solo music in 2019, when her song "Broken" gained attention on streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify. She released the EPs Weathered in 2020 and Unwritten in 2021, alongside singles such as "Everybody Shot," "Lights Freestyle," "Hazard," and "4Life Freestyle." She also featured on Kota the Friend's 2020 song "We Could Be."

Carter later teamed up with TaTa and Kyle Richh to form the rap group 41. Their work included the 2021 track "41 Reasons" and 2022 songs such as "41 Bop" and "See Red." Carter, TaTa, and Kyle Richh also collaborated on the 2023 song "Fetty," while Carter and Kyle Richh released "Die Richh" in 2021. Other tracks associated with her rise include "Bent," "Strangers," and "Thooties," a collaboration with Dee Billz.

Alongside her recordings, Carter has performed at New York venues including Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom. She toured the United States for Anderson Paak and Gallant and opened for Hiatus Kaiyote at a San Francisco show in 2021.

Carter's music combines drill's fast-paced beats and aggressive delivery with elements of jazz, blues, folk, and R&B. Her lyrics are described as soulful and often address current social issues, while her earlier work had a more R&B-oriented sound.

She has cited Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Anderson Paak, and Kendrick Lamar among her influences. Her music videos and streaming releases, including "Everybody Shot," "See Red," "Lights Freestyle," and "Bent," helped establish her profile in New York drill.
