James Hetfield

Hetfield was married to Francesca Tomasi from 1997 until their divorce in 2022. They have three children, Cali, Castor, and Marcella. Castor is a drummer for the band Bastardane.

Hetfield has spoken about how Francesca helped him mature and deal with anger more constructively. He moved to Vail, Colorado, citing its quiet setting, natural beauty, and connection to Francesca's childhood hometown.

Hetfield's mother, Cynthia, was an opera singer, while his father, Virgil, was a truck driver. His parents were strict Christian Scientists, and his mother died of cancer when he was 16. The experience influenced Metallica songs including "The God That Failed" and "Dyers Eve."

He began piano lessons at nine, played his half-brother David's drums, and started learning guitar at 14. Aerosmith was his main childhood musical influence. As a teenager, he played in the bands Obsession and Leather Charm before answering an advertisement placed by drummer Lars Ulrich in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler.

Hetfield co-founded Metallica with Lars Ulrich in October 1981. He initially focused on rhythm guitar, but took on lead vocals when the band could not find a suitable singer. The early lineup also included guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney, with Kirk Hammett joining in 1983 and Cliff Burton later becoming the band's bassist.

Hetfield's vocals, riffs, lyrics, and guitar harmonies became central to Metallica's sound. The band's early albums, including Kill 'Em All (1983), Ride the Lightning (1984), and Master of Puppets (1986), helped establish its speed metal and thrash metal reputation. Metallica's self-titled 1991 album became a landmark commercial success, followed by Load, Reload, St. Anger, Death Magnetic, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct, and 72 Seasons.

Hetfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Metallica in 2009. He is particularly associated with fast downpicking, a technique that led Annihilator guitarist Jeff Waters to call him the "King of Downpicking."

During Metallica's 1992 concert in Montreal on the Guns N' Roses/Metallica Stadium Tour, a pyrotechnic charge exploded beside Hetfield during "Fade to Black." He suffered second- and third-degree burns to his left side, including his hand, arm, face, eyebrows, and hair. He returned to the stage 17 days later, while guitar technician John Marshall temporarily handled his rhythm-guitar duties.

Hetfield entered rehabilitation in 2001 to address alcohol use and other addictions while Metallica was recording St. Anger. He returned after several months and discussed the experience in the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. He entered rehabilitation again in 2019, which led Metallica to cancel its Australia and New Zealand tour dates.

After vocal problems during the early 1990s, Hetfield took voice lessons. His vocal coach gave him a cassette of piano-based warm-up exercises, which he continued using before Metallica performances and recordings.

Hetfield has appeared as himself in music documentaries and concert films including A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, and Metallica: Through the Never. He played Bob Hayward in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and Simon Deasy in The Thicket. His voice roles include Chino in Dave the Barbarian and Wolfgang in Skylanders Academy.

He has contributed vocals or guitar to recordings by Danzig, Corrosion of Conformity, Primus, Gov't Mule, and Heart. He also performed with Queen and Tony Iommi at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and sang with Alice in Chains during performances of "Would?"

Hetfield has been a prominent ESP Guitars endorser since the 1980s. His best-known instruments include custom Explorer-style guitars, the ESP Iron Cross, and the ESP/LTD Snakebyte, often paired with his signature EMG JH pickups.
