DeMar DeRozan

DeRozan is the son of Frank and Diane DeRozan and has daughters, including Diar. He has two daughters with his former fiancée, Kiara Morrison. His daughter Diar gained national attention in 2023 when her screams during free throws affected the Toronto Raptors' shooting in the Bulls' play-in victory.

DeRozan has spoken openly about his struggles with depression and has advocated for people experiencing mental-health difficulties. His public conversations with Kevin Love helped prompt the NBA to require every team to have at least one full-time licensed mental-health professional. DeRozan and Love also appeared together in an NBA public-service announcement about mental-health resources.

DeRozan played varsity basketball for all four years at Compton High School and emerged as one of the leading recruits in the 2008 class. As a senior, he averaged 29.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while leading Compton to a 26-6 record, a second consecutive Moore League championship and the CIF Division IAA Southern Section quarter-finals.

He was named a McDonald's All-American, won the 2008 McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk Competition and earned first-team Parade All-American honors. DeRozan chose USC over Arizona and North Carolina, then started all 35 games in his only college season. He averaged 13.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, won Pac-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors and was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. USC later retired his No. 10 jersey.

DeRozan entered the 2009 NBA draft after one season at USC and was selected ninth overall by the Toronto Raptors. He spent nine seasons with Toronto, becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer and helping the team reach the playoffs five times. He played alongside Rudy Gay on the Raptors from 2012 to 2013.

The 2013-14 season marked a breakout. DeRozan averaged career highs of 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, earned his first NBA All-Star selection and helped Toronto reach the playoffs for the first time since 2008. In 2016, he helped the Raptors win their first playoff series and advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in franchise history.

DeRozan set a Toronto franchise record with 52 points against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 1, 2018. He finished his Toronto tenure as the franchise leader in regular-season games played, wins, minutes, field goals and free throws. He was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 2017 and the All-NBA Second Team in 2018.

The Raptors traded DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs in 2018 in a deal involving Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. In his first season with San Antonio, DeRozan recorded the first triple-double of his career with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists against Toronto. He played three seasons with the Spurs before joining the Chicago Bulls in 2021.

DeRozan's first Bulls season included consecutive game-winning buzzer-beaters against the Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards, making him the first player in NBA history to hit such shots on consecutive days. He also set an NBA record by scoring at least 35 points while shooting at least 50 percent in seven consecutive games. He was an All-Star starter and All-NBA Second Team selection in 2022.

In 2022, DeRozan became the 50th player in NBA history to reach 20,000 career points. He scored a career playoff-high 41 points against the Milwaukee Bucks that season, and in 2023 he and Zach LaVine combined for a Bulls record 88 points in a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

DeRozan joined the Sacramento Kings in 2024. He reached 25,000 career points in 2025 and became the sixth player in NBA history to average at least 20 points per game in 12 or more consecutive seasons, with a minimum of 60 games played in each season. He was waived by Sacramento in 2026.

DeRozan represented the United States at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, where the team won the gold medal. He also played for Team USA at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, helping the United States win Olympic gold.

DeRozan published Above the Noise: My Story of Chasing Calm in 2024. The memoir describes his experiences with depression, personal growth and the gradual process of healing.
