Personal life

Deepika Padukone has been married to actor Ranveer Singh since 2018. They married in traditional Konkani Hindu and Sikh Anand Karaj ceremonies at Lake Como, Italy, in November 2018.

Padukone and Singh have a daughter named Dua, who was born in September 2024. Padukone is the daughter of former badminton champion Prakash Padukone and travel agent Ujjala Padukone, and her younger sister Anisha is a golfer.

From badminton and modelling to the big screen

Padukone played badminton competitively from childhood and competed in national-level championships. She also played baseball in state-level tournaments. She began appearing in advertising campaigns at the age of eight, then shifted her focus to fashion modelling during her school years.

She began modelling full time in 2004 under the guidance of Prasad Bidapa. Her early work included advertising campaigns for Liril, Close-Up and Limca, as well as a prominent appearance in the 2006 Kingfisher Calendar. She made her runway debut at Lakmé Fashion Week in 2005 for designer Suneet Varma and won Model of the Year at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards.

Padukone gained wider attention through the music video for Himesh Reshammiya's song "Naam Hai Tera" from Aap Ka Surroor. Before acting, she attended Anupam Kher's film academy to develop her performance skills.

Breakthrough with Om Shanti Om and career rise

Padukone made her film debut in the Kannada romantic comedy Aishwarya in 2006, playing the title role opposite Upendra. Her first Hindi film was Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om in 2007, in which she played dual roles opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film became the highest-grossing Hindi film of that year, and Padukone won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

After a difficult run of films early in the following decade, Padukone identified Homi Adajania's Cocktail as a turning point. Her performance as Veronica brought major critical attention, followed by commercially successful roles in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Happy New Year in 2013 and 2014.

She received two Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for her performances in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Piku. Other notable roles included Mastani in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani, Rani Padmavati in Padmaavat, and a character based on a survivor of an acid attack in Chhapaak.

Padukone expanded into production through Ka Productions, producing Chhapaak and the cricket drama 83, in which she also played Romi Dev. She later returned to major action films with Pathaan, Jawan, Fighter, Kalki 2898 AD and Singham Again. She served as a jury member at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Mental health advocacy and other work

Padukone has spoken publicly about her experience of depression and founded The Live Love Laugh Foundation in 2015 to promote mental-health awareness in India. The foundation launched the More Than Just Sad campaign to assist general physicians treating depression and anxiety, and later worked with Facebook and AASRA on multilingual suicide-prevention tools and educational resources.

For her mental-health advocacy, Padukone received the World Economic Forum's Crystal Award in 2020 and the Time100 Impact Award in 2022. She also became a brand ambassador for the Indian Psychiatric Society.

Her work outside acting has included writing lifestyle columns, performing in stage shows, designing women's clothing lines, serving as chairperson of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image from 2019 to 2021, and launching the self-care brand 82°E in 2022.
