Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev was born in Moscow to Sergey Medvedev, a computer engineer and building materials entrepreneur, and Olga Medvedeva. He is the youngest of three siblings, with two older sisters named Julia and Elena. His family relocated to France so he could develop his tennis training, and he later established his residence in Monte Carlo, Monaco. He speaks Russian, English, and French fluently.

Medvedev married former junior tennis player Daria Chernyshkova on 12 September 2018 in Moscow. He has credited his marriage with bringing stability to his career and accelerating his rise into the top tier of men's tennis. The couple have two daughters: Alisa, born in October 2022, and Vika, born in January 2025. Fellow professional tennis player Andrey Rublev serves as the godfather to his eldest daughter.

Medvedev began playing tennis at the age of six after his mother saw an advertisement for group lessons at the swimming pool where he was taking classes. His early training was guided by coach Ekaterina Kryuchkova, who had previously trained Vera Zvonareva. As a child, he also took lessons in guitar and harpsichord.

Medvedev attended a specialized school with an emphasis on physics and mathematics, graduating early to study economics and commerce at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He left the program to focus entirely on tennis, later completing a coaching degree at the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism. On the junior circuit, he reached a peak junior ranking of world No. 13 in 2014 before turning professional.

Medvedev made his ATP main draw debut in 2015 and won his first three ATP singles titles in 2018 at Sydney, Winston-Salem, and Tokyo. His major breakthrough came in 2019, when he reached six consecutive tournament finals, including his first Masters 1000 titles in Cincinnati and Shanghai and his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open, which he lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets.

In 2020, Medvedev won the year-end ATP Finals by defeating the top three ranked players in the world during the tournament. He secured his first Grand Slam singles championship at the 2021 US Open, defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets and stopping Djokovic's bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam. In February 2022, Medvedev ascended to world No. 1 in the ATP rankings, becoming the first player outside the Big Four to reach the top spot since Andy Roddick in 2004, and the third Russian man to do so after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin.

Medvedev has reached six Grand Slam singles finals, finishing as runner-up at the Australian Open in 2021, 2022, and 2024, as well as the US Open in 2019 and 2023. At the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, he captured his first ATP title on clay courts, expanding his versatility beyond his preferred hard surfaces.

After a long collaboration with coach Gilles Cervara that began in 2017, Medvedev adjusted his coaching setup in 2025, bringing in Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke. Under their guidance, he snapped an 882-day title drought by winning the 2025 Almaty Open. He went on to secure additional titles in Brisbane and Dubai in 2026, becoming the first player in the Open Era to win his first 22 ATP titles across 22 different cities.

Standing 1.98 meters tall, Medvedev is celebrated for his unorthodox counterpunching style, deep positioning on return of serve, powerful first serve, and flat, highly consistent groundstrokes from the baseline. His two-handed backhand is considered among the most effective on tour, allowing him to absorb pace and dictate long exchanges.

Medvedev has maintained intense rivalries across the ATP Tour, most notably with Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Jannik Sinner. His clashes with Tsitsipas originated during an argument at the 2018 Miami Open, while his series of major finals against Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Jannik Sinner produced several of the longest and most dramatic matches in recent Grand Slam history.
