Tommy Lee Jones

Tommy Lee Jones was married to Kate Lardner from 1971 to 1978 and to Kimberlea Cloughley from 1981 to 1996. He has two children, Austin and Victoria, from his marriage to Cloughley. He has been married to photographer Dawn Laurel since 2001.

Jones resides in Texas and has operated cattle and horse ranches. He is also a polo player, supports the Harvard Polo Club, and is a member of the Polo Training Foundation.

Raised in Midland, Texas, Jones attended St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas on a scholarship before entering Harvard University in 1965. He studied English literature and graduated cum laude in 1969. His senior thesis examined Catholicism in the works of Flannery O'Connor.

Jones played offensive guard for the Harvard Crimson from 1965 to 1968 and was part of the undefeated 1968 team. He played in the celebrated Harvard-Yale game that ended in a 29-29 tie. At Harvard, he was roommates with Al Gore, who later became vice president of the United States.

After college, Jones moved to New York and made his Broadway debut in A Patriot for Me in 1969. His first film role was as a Harvard student in Love Story (1970). He later played Dr. Mark Toland on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live from 1971 to 1975.

Jones gained early television recognition for playing Howard Hughes in The Amazing Howard Hughes (1977). His film work included The Betsy (1978), Eyes of Laura Mars (1978), and Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), in which he portrayed Doolittle "Mooney" Lynn, the husband of country singer Loretta Lynn.

He won a Primetime Emmy Award for playing executed murderer Gary Gilmore in The Executioner's Song (1982). He received another Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Texas Ranger Woodrow F. Call in the miniseries Lonesome Dove (1989).

His performance as Clay Shaw in JFK (1991) brought his first Academy Award nomination. He won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for playing Deputy U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive (1993), later reprising the role in U.S. Marshals (1998).

Jones played a broad range of characters during the 1990s, including Two-Face in Batman Forever, Agent K in Men in Black, an ambitious prosecutor in The Client, a prison warden in Natural Born Killers, and baseball player Ty Cobb in Cobb. He returned as Agent K in Men in Black II (2002) and Men in Black 3 (2012).

Jones made his directing debut with the television western The Good Old Boys (1995), in which he also starred and co-wrote the teleplay. He directed and starred in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005), a western about a rancher who takes the body of a friend back to Mexico. His performance won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

He received Academy Award nominations for his performances in In the Valley of Elah (2007) and Lincoln (2012). In No Country for Old Men (2007), he played Texas sheriff Ed Tom Bell. In Lincoln, he portrayed Congressman Thaddeus Stevens.

Jones directed, co-wrote, and starred in The Homesman (2014), and directed, produced, and acted in the television film The Sunset Limited (2011), which co-starred Samuel L. Jackson. His later acting credits include CIA Director Robert Dewey in Jason Bourne (2016), a journalist in Shock and Awe (2017), and H. Clifford McBride in Ad Astra (2019).
