Timothée Chalamet is an American and French actor known for playing Elio Perlman in Call Me by Your Name and Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's Dune films. He has also earned acclaim for portraying Willy Wonka in Wonka and Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

Personal life

Timothée Chalamet has been in a relationship with Kylie Jenner since April 2023.

He is an avid sports fan who once aspired to become a professional soccer player. He supports the French club Saint-Étienne, follows both France and the United States in international soccer, and regularly attends New York Knicks basketball games. He is also childhood friends with professional soccer player Alex Muyl.

Early life and education

Chalamet grew up in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in an artistic family. His mother, Nicole Flender, is a real estate agent and former Broadway dancer, while his father, Marc Chalamet, is a French-born editor who worked for UNICEF. His older sister, Pauline Chalamet, is an actress, and his uncle Rodman Flender is a filmmaker and producer. Chalamet is bilingual in English and French and spent summers with his paternal grandparents in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France.

He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where he appeared in school productions of Cabaret and Sweet Charity. After graduating in 2013, he studied cultural anthropology at Columbia University for a year before transferring to New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. He later left university to concentrate on acting.

Breakthrough in Call Me by Your Name and other films from the late 2010s

Chalamet began acting in commercials and short films before appearing on television in Law & Order, Loving Leah, Royal Pains, and Homeland. His feature-film debut came in 2014 with Jason Reitman's Men, Women & Children, followed by a role as the teenage son of Matthew McConaughey's character in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. He also appeared in The Adderall Diaries, One & Two, Miss Stevens, and Love the Coopers.

His breakthrough arrived with Luca Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name (2017), in which he played Elio Perlman, a teenager who falls in love with Oliver, portrayed by Armie Hammer. Chalamet learned Italian, piano, and guitar for the role, which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor and wins including the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Performer and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.

In the same period, he played supporting roles in Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird and Scott Cooper's Hostiles. He later portrayed Nic Sheff in Beautiful Boy, Henry V in The King, and Theodore “Laurie” Laurence in Gerwig's Little Women. He also starred in A Rainy Day in New York and hosted Saturday Night Live in 2020.

Dune and other movies from the 2020s

Chalamet moved into major leading roles in the 2020s. He played Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's science-fiction films Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), appearing alongside Zendaya, who played Chani. He also worked with Wes Anderson in The French Dispatch, joined the ensemble of Adam McKay's Don't Look Up, and reunited with Luca Guadagnino for Bones and All, his first production venture.

In Wonka (2023), Chalamet played a young version of Roald Dahl's chocolatier and sang seven songs for the film's soundtrack. He then produced and starred in James Mangold's A Complete Unknown (2024), portraying Bob Dylan. Chalamet sang 40 Dylan songs and played guitar and harmonica for the film, earning Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Actor Award nominations, and winning the Actor Award for Best Actor.

Chalamet produced and starred in Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme (2025), playing a character inspired by table-tennis player Marty Reisman. He trained in ping-pong for the role and received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Picture as a producer. His performance also earned him the Critics' Choice Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

Red carpet fashion

Chalamet's red carpet clothing has become a prominent part of his public image. He has worked with designers including Haider Ackermann, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Virgil Abloh, and has been recognized for clothing that blends traditionally masculine and feminine styles.
