Sia

In the late 1990s, Sia planned to move to London to live with her boyfriend Dan Pontifex, who was tragically struck by a car and killed shortly before her arrival. His death deeply affected her and became the central theme of her second album, Healing Is Difficult. In 2008, she spoke openly about her sexuality, mentioning relationships with partners of various genders, including a relationship with musician JD Samson from 2008 to 2011, and she later identified publicly as queer.

Sia married documentary filmmaker Erik Anders Lang at her home in Palm Springs, California, in August 2014, and the couple divorced in 2016. She later married Dan Bernad in December 2022, holding a formal wedding ceremony in Portofino, Italy, in May 2023. They welcomed a child named Somersault in March 2024 before separating and filing for divorce in 2025. In 2019, Sia adopted two teenage sons who were aging out of the foster care system, and in 2020 she became a grandmother after one of her sons fathered twins.

Throughout her adult life, Sia has been candid about managing mental health challenges, depression, addiction, and complex post-traumatic stress disorder. She has also spoken about living with chronic medical conditions, including thyroid issues caused by Graves' disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and receiving a diagnosis of autism later in life.

Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Sia began her musical career in the mid-1990s as a vocalist with the local acid jazz ensemble Crisp, contributing to their album Word and the Deal and EP Delirium. Following the group's disbandment in 1997, she released her debut solo album, OnlySee, on Flavoured Records in Australia under her full name, Sia Furler.

After relocating to the United Kingdom, she performed backing vocals for Jamiroquai and began a fruitful collaboration with the English downtempo duo Zero 7. She provided lead vocals for notable tracks on their albums Simple Things, When It Falls, and The Garden, including the hit single "Destiny". In 2000, she signed with Sony's DancePool imprint and released the UK top-ten single "Taken for Granted", followed by the 2001 solo album Healing Is Difficult.

In 2004, she released her third studio album, Colour the Small One, through Go! Beat Records. The album featured the poignant ballad "Breathe Me", which later gained widespread international attention when it was featured during the emotional finale of the HBO drama series Six Feet Under. The resulting exposure revitalized her solo career and led to extensive touring across North America.

Sia moved to New York City in 2005 to tour and expand her American fan base, issuing the live recording Lady Croissant in 2007. Her fourth studio album, Some People Have Real Problems (2008), became her first record to place on the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold in Australia. In 2010, she followed up with the pop-driven album We Are Born, which won ARIA Music Awards for Best Pop Release and Best Independent Release.

Despite critical and commercial success, Sia found herself overwhelmed by the pressures of public recognition and touring. Deciding to step back from solo performing, she redirected her energy into writing songs for other major artists. Working alongside top producers, she penned a string of massive worldwide hits, including David Guetta's "Titanium", Rihanna's Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "Diamonds", Flo Rida's "Wild Ones", and Beyoncé's "Pretty Hurts".

Sia returned to releasing her own material with the July 2014 launch of 1000 Forms of Fear, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. The album featured the international smash hit "Chandelier", which earned four Grammy Award nominations. To shield herself from invasive public scrutiny, Sia adopted the signature approach of concealing her face beneath oversized, blunt-cut wigs, frequently turning her back to audiences during televised performances while collaborator Maddie Ziegler danced on stage in identical hair.

In 2016, Sia released This Is Acting, a collection largely comprised of songs she had originally written for other major pop stars. The album generated her first US Billboard Hot 100 number-one single as a lead artist, "Cheap Thrills", featuring Sean Paul. Later that year, she embarked on the widely acclaimed Nostalgic for the Present Tour, combining live singing with theatrical choreography and performance art.

Expanding her creative output, Sia released the original holiday album Everyday Is Christmas in 2017, which produced the enduring seasonal favorite "Snowman". In 2018, she formed the supergroup LSD with British singer-producer Labrinth and American producer Diplo, releasing a self-titled full-length album the following year that included singles such as "Genius" and "Thunderclouds".

Sia made her feature film directorial debut with the 2021 musical drama Music, which starred Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr, and Maddie Ziegler, accompanying the film with the soundtrack album Music. Songs from and Inspired by the Motion Picture. In May 2024, she released her tenth studio album, Reasonable Woman, featuring guest collaborations with artists including Kylie Minogue, Chaka Khan, Labrinth, and Paris Hilton.

Throughout her career, Sia has been an outspoken advocate for animal rights and pet adoption. She has participated in multiple campaigns with organizations like PETA and the ASPCA, supported the Beagle Freedom Project, and incorporated dog adoption drives directly into the venues on her concert tours. In 2018, she served as a co-narrator for the Australian animal welfare documentary Dominion.

Her charitable efforts also include substantial donations to pandemic relief organizations such as CORE Response, bail funds, and community initiatives in Australia. A dedicated fan of the competition reality show Survivor, she established an informal tradition of awarding significant personal cash gifts, widely known as the Sia Award, to her favorite contestants on the show.
