Shaquille O'Neal

O'Neal married Shaunie Nelson in 2002, and the couple had four children together: Shareef, Amirah, Shaqir, and Me'arah. Each also had a child from a previous relationship, including his son Myles. The couple reached a divorce settlement in 2010. Later, O'Neal dated Laticia Rolle from 2014 to 2018.

Alongside his athletic and media pursuits, O'Neal prioritized his academic education. Although he left Louisiana State University early for the NBA draft, he returned to complete his Bachelor of Arts in general studies in 2000. He later earned an MBA online through the University of Phoenix in 2005 and completed a doctorate in education from Barry University in 2012. A long-standing interest in public service, encouraged by his stepfather, led him to serve as a reserve officer, deputy, or sheriff trainee across several cities where he played.

Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Lucille O'Neal and Joe Toney. His parents separated when he was an infant, and his mother later married Army Sergeant Philip Harrison. The family lived in Newark before Harrison was stationed at a military base in West Germany when O'Neal was 12. While attending Fulda American High School in West Germany, O'Neal met Dale Brown, the head coach of Louisiana State University, who was conducting basketball clinics overseas.

The family relocated to San Antonio, Texas, in 1987, where O'Neal attended Robert G. Cole High School. He led his team to a 36-0 record and a Texas state championship as a senior. O'Neal chose to attend LSU to play under Brown, developing into a two-time first-team All-American. In 1991, he received the Adolph Rupp Trophy as the NCAA men's basketball player of the year after leading the nation in blocked shots.

Selected first overall in the 1992 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic, O'Neal won the 1992-93 NBA Rookie of the Year award. He captured a scoring title and led Orlando to the 1995 NBA Finals. His physical strength and size made him an unstoppable offensive force, leading opponents to introduce the 'Hack-a-Shaq' strategy of intentionally fouling him to capitalize on his free-throw difficulties.

In 1996, O'Neal won an Olympic gold medal with the United States national team and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, pairing with Kobe Bryant. Under head coach Phil Jackson, O'Neal earned the NBA regular season MVP award in 2000 and led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002, winning the Finals MVP award each year. In 2000, he joined Willis Reed and Michael Jordan as one of the few players to win the regular season MVP, All-Star MVP, and Finals MVP in a single year.

Following a trade to the Miami Heat in 2004, O'Neal paired with guard Dwyane Wade to secure the franchise's first NBA championship in 2006. He concluded his 19-year NBA career with subsequent tenures on the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers alongside LeBron James, and Boston Celtics, retiring in 2011 with 28,596 career points. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2017.

Outside basketball, O'Neal pursued diverse entertainment ventures. In 1993, he launched a music career with his debut rap album, Shaq Diesel, which earned platinum certification. He also took on feature film roles in movies such as Blue Chips (1994), Kazaam (1996), and Steel (1997), and later voiced an animated version of himself in The LEGO Movie (2014). He has also performed as an electronic music producer and touring DJ under the moniker Diesel.

After retiring from active play, O'Neal joined the television program Inside the NBA as an analyst, introducing the popular recurring segment 'Shaqtin' a Fool.' In sports management, he acquired a minority ownership stake in the Sacramento Kings in 2013 and agreed to serve as the voluntary, unpaid general manager for the Sacramento State University men's basketball program in 2025.
