Scottie Scheffler is an American professional golfer who reached world number one and won two Masters titles alongside an Olympic gold medal. Raised in Dallas after moving from New Jersey at age six, he won three state high school titles before playing collegiate golf at the University of Texas. He turned professional in 2018, won Player of the Year honors on the Korn Ferry Tour, and joined the PGA Tour in 2020, where he quickly shot a historic round of 59. Scheffler was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, to Scott and Diane Scheffler. The family moved to Dallas, Texas, following the September 11 attacks when he was six. His father was a stay-at-home dad, while his mother worked as chief operations officer at the Thompson & Knight law firm. To afford his training, his parents borrowed money to secure a membership at Dallas's Royal Oaks Country Club. There, he trained under swing coach Randy Smith. Scheffler grew up alongside three sisters: Callie, Sara, and Mollie. Callie later played collegiate golf at Texas A&M and caddied for him during the 2016 U.S. Open.
He met Meredith Scudder while attending Highland Park High School. The two began dating as teenagers and maintained a long-distance relationship when Scheffler attended the University of Texas and Scudder went to Texas A&M. Scheffler proposed at the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in June 2020, and the couple married later that year. They have one son together.
Amateur and collegiate career
Scheffler won 75 junior tournaments in Texas between 2004 and 2010. At Highland Park High School, he won three straight individual state titles from 2012 to 2014. He claimed the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur title and entered college as the country's top-ranked junior.
At the University of Texas from 2014 to 2018, Scheffler helped the Longhorns win three Big 12 championships. He earned the Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year award in 2015 and helped the United States win the Walker Cup in 2017. He also qualified for two U.S. Opens as an amateur, earning low amateur honors at Erin Hills in 2017.
Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour rookie success
Scheffler turned professional in late 2018 and earned playing privileges through the Korn Ferry Tour qualifying school. In May 2019, he won the Evans Scholars Invitational in a playoff after shooting a final-round 63. He won again in August at the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship. Those victories secured him the Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year award and full PGA Tour status.
His rookie season on the PGA Tour produced rapid results. At the 2020 Northern Trust, he shot a second-round 59, becoming only the twelfth player in PGA Tour history to break 60. He tied for fourth at the 2020 PGA Championship and earned PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors.
Major championships and Olympic gold
Scheffler hired veteran caddie Ted Scott in late 2021 after connecting through a shared bible study group. The partnership brought immediate results. In early 2022, Scheffler won four times in six starts, capturing the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the WGC-Dell Match Play before securing his first major title at the Masters. The run moved him to world number one.
He continued winning over the following seasons. In 2023, he retained his Phoenix Open title and won The Players Championship. The 2024 season brought further success. Scheffler switched to a mallet putter, repeated as Players champion, and won his second Masters title by four strokes. Later that summer at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he fired a final-round 62 to win the individual gold medal for the United States, followed by victory at the Tour Championship.
