Justin Rose

Justin Rose married Kate Phillips, a former international gymnast, in 2006. They have two children, a son named Leo and a daughter named Charlotte.

Rose has homes in London and The Bahamas. He is also an advocate for sustainable golf facilities and works as an ambassador for the STRI Golf Environment Awards.

Rose began playing golf in England after his family moved there from Johannesburg when he was five. He played at several clubs in Hampshire and broke 70 for the first time at age 11. By age 14, he had a plus-three handicap.

At the 1998 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, Rose holed out for birdie from the rough on the 18th hole to finish tied for fourth as a 17-year-old amateur. He won the Silver Medal as the leading amateur and turned professional the following day.

His professional start was difficult. He missed the cut in his first 21 consecutive events, but he earned his European Tour card at qualifying school in 1999 and won his first professional event, the 2002 Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

Rose established himself on the European and PGA Tours during the 2000s. He won the European Tour Order of Merit in 2007 and later claimed World Golf Championship victories at the 2012 Cadillac Championship and the 2017 HSBC Champions.

At the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, Rose finished two strokes ahead of Jason Day and Phil Mickelson. The victory made him the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970. Rose has described his four-iron approach to the 18th hole as his best career shot.

Representing Great Britain at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Rose made the first hole-in-one in Olympic golf history during the opening round. He went on to win the gold medal after defeating Henrik Stenson by two strokes.

Rose reached number one in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in September 2018. That year he won the FedEx Cup and was part of Europe's winning Ryder Cup team. He has represented Europe in the Ryder Cup seven times and played on five winning teams.

He has remained a regular contender in the major championships. Rose finished runner-up at the 2015 and 2017 Masters, losing the latter in a playoff to Sergio García, and was runner-up at The Open Championship at Carnoustie in 2018 and Royal Troon in 2024.

At the 2025 Masters, Rose tied Rory McIlroy at 11 under par after making up seven strokes in the final round, then lost in a playoff. In 2026, he won the Farmers Insurance Open with a tournament-record score of 23 under par and became the first wire-to-wire winner of the event since Tommy Bolt in 1955.

Rose was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to golf. He received the PGA Tour's Payne Stewart Award in 2021 for his character, sportsmanship and commitment to charity.

In 2023, Rose received the Nicklaus-Jacklin Award at the Ryder Cup.
