Personal life

Lewis married professional skateboarder Steve Berra in September 1999, and she filed for divorce in 2003. Lewis described the divorce as amicable. She also had a four-year relationship with Brad Pitt after they co-starred in the television film Too Young to Die? and later reunited in Kalifornia.

Lewis was born into Scientology and practiced it during the 1990s and 2000s. By 2021, she described herself as a spiritualist and said she did not identify as a Scientologist.

Early acting career and *Cape Fear*

The daughter of actor Geoffrey Lewis, Juliette Lewis began acting as a child. She made her first major television appearance in the 1987 film Home Fires and starred as Kate Farrell in the ABC sitcom I Married Dora. At 14, she was legally emancipated from her parents with their approval so she could work more freely, and she left high school at 15.

Lewis made her film debut in My Stepmother Is an Alien in 1988 before appearing as Audrey Griswold in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Her breakthrough came with Cape Fear in 1991, in which she played Danielle Bowden opposite Robert De Niro. Her performance earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress, helping establish her as a prominent young actor in American cinema.

Film roles in the 1990s and 2000s

After Cape Fear, Lewis worked with Woody Allen in Husbands and Wives and appeared in Kalifornia, Romeo Is Bleeding and What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993. She played Mallory Knox in Oliver Stone's controversial crime film Natural Born Killers in 1994 and received the Pasinetti Award for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for the role.

Her other notable films from the period included Kathryn Bigelow's Strange Days, The Basketball Diaries, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Other Sister and Old School. She received an Emmy nomination for the television film Hysterical Blindness and later earned praise for her supporting performance in Conviction, winning the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2010.

Juliette and the Licks and solo music

Lewis began a musical career in 2003 by forming the rock band Juliette and the Licks with former Hole drummer Patty Schemel. The group released the EP ...Like a Bolt of Lightning in 2004 and the albums You're Speaking My Language in 2005 and Four on the Floor in 2007. The band toured internationally and separated in 2009.

Lewis began releasing music as a solo artist after the band's breakup. Her solo album Terra Incognita was released in 2009, followed by the EP Future Deep in 2016. She has also contributed vocals to recordings by The Prodigy, Karma Fields and Morten, Joseph Arthur, and The Infidels.
