Philip Rivers has been married to Tiffany Goodwin since May 19, 2001. IMDb identifies Tiffany Goodwin as his spouse and lists their children as Andrew Joseph Rivers, Halle Rivers, Rebecca Rivers, Clare Rivers, Sarah, Grace, Gunner, Peter, Caroline and Anna.

The same biography separately lists nine children, naming Halle, Caroline, Grace, Gunner, Sarah, Peter, Rebecca, Clare and Anna. Rivers is also described as a father and grandfather.

Rivers attended North Carolina State University. In 2003, he led the NCAA in pass completion percentage, at 72 percent, and passer efficiency rating, at 170.5.

The New York Giants selected him fourth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. The draft class also included Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Larry Fitzgerald.

Rivers played 16 seasons with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers. ESPN lists his Chargers tenure from 2004 through 2020, including 13 seasons with San Diego and three with Los Angeles.

He was selected to eight Pro Bowls and won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 2013. His trademark throwing motion was described as unorthodox.

After one season with the Indianapolis Colts, Rivers announced his retirement on January 20, 2021. He said at the time that it was the right moment to end his playing career.

In December 2025, the Colts brought Rivers out of retirement after starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon. Rivers worked out with Indianapolis on his birthday and joined the team's practice squad before being elevated to the active roster. His return came more than four years after his previous NFL snap.

Rivers also shared a professional connection with Colts rookie quarterback Riley Leonard. The two had trained together several times, and Leonard considered Rivers a mentor. Rivers later helped Leonard prepare for his first NFL start.

Rivers interviewed for the Buffalo Bills' head-coaching position after returning to the NFL. He later withdrew from the search.

His return also renewed interest in him as a potential NFL head coach, with teams researching him as a candidate during the 2026 coaching cycle.

Rivers became eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the first time in 2025. He was named one of 26 modern-era semifinalists for the 2026 class alongside Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Frank Gore and Jason Witten.

His potential induction timeline could be affected by his return to the Colts. A player added to an active roster becomes ineligible for that Hall of Fame class, which would reset the earliest possible consideration to the Class of 2031.
