Natanael Cano is a Mexican rapper and singer known for pioneering corridos tumbados, a fusion of regional Mexican corridos and trap music. His breakthrough came through songs including "El de los Lentes Gucci," "El Drip," and the Bad Bunny remix of "Soy el Diablo."
Early musical development
Natanael Cano was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, and began showing musical ability at family gatherings as a child. His father, Rubén Cano, encouraged his interest in music. Cano taught himself to play the piano at 13, beginning with Maná's "Rayando el Sol," and later focused on regional Mexican corridos.
He drew particular inspiration from Ariel Camacho, as well as artists such as Gerardo Ortiz and Legado 7. At 16, he uploaded "El de los Lentes Gucci" to YouTube, an early recording in which he combined hip-hop and trap with corrido music.
Creating corridos tumbados
Cano began his professional music career by uploading guitar covers to YouTube and performing in underground settings. He signed with Five Music in 2019 and released his debut studio album, Todo Es Diferente. The album included "Soy el Diablo," whose remix with Bad Bunny brought Cano wider international attention.
Cano signed with Rancho Humilde after label owner Jimmy Humilde saw one of his performances in an Instagram video. His first Rancho Humilde single, "El Drip," reached the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. He followed it with Corridos Tumbados, Mi Verdad Corridos Tumbados, and Mi Nuevo Yo in 2019.
His style adapts the storytelling tradition and string-based sound of Mexican corridos to contemporary trap, hip-hop, and reggaeton influences. Cano has described the approach as giving regional Mexican music the sound of a younger generation. His later releases include A Mis 20, NataKong, Nata Montana, and Porque La Demora.
Collaborations, performances, and recognition
Cano has collaborated with Bad Bunny, Junior H, Ovi, Peso Pluma, Gabito Ballesteros, Óscar Maydon, and other artists. His collaborations with Peso Pluma include "PRC" and "AMG," while "CH y la Pizza" was recorded with Fuerza Regida. He also worked with Steve Aoki on "Kong 2.0" and with Bizarrap on "Natanael Cano: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 59."
In 2020, he performed "Yo Ya Sé" on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and won three Premios Juventud awards, including New Regional Mexican Generation and awards connected to "Amor Tumbado" and the "Soy el Diablo" remix. He later won the 2023 Premios Juventud award for Best Regional Mexican Collaboration for "PRC." He was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Nata Montana.
Cano's first concert at Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional took place in May 2023 before an audience of 10,000 people. During the performance, his mother joined him on stage and kissed him.
