Mammootty

Mammootty was raised in the village of Chempu near Vaikom in the Kottayam district of Kerala. He is the eldest son of Ismail, an agriculturist and wholesale merchant, and Fatima, a homemaker. He has two younger brothers, Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah, and three younger sisters, Ameena, Sauda, and Shafina. His brother Ibrahimkutty and nephews Maqbool Salmaan and Ashkar Saudan also pursued acting careers in Malayalam film and television.

In 1979, Mammootty married Sulfath Kutty in an arranged marriage. The couple resides in Kochi and has two children: a daughter, Surumi, and a son, Dulquer Salmaan, who established a prominent career as a film actor and producer in South Indian and Hindi cinema.

Mammootty completed his pre-university education at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. He went on to earn a law degree from Government Law College, Ernakulam, and subsequently practiced as an advocate in Manjeri for two years before pursuing acting full-time.

His initial brush with cinema came as an uncredited extra in K. S. Sethumadhavan's 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. After playing a small role as a boatman in Kaalachakram (1973) and acting in stage plays, he was introduced to author and filmmaker M. T. Vasudevan Nair. Nair cast him in Vilkkanundu Swapnangal (1980), providing Mammootty his first credited screen role. He gained broader recognition through K. G. George's circus drama Mela (1980) and secured his first Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor in I. V. Sasi's Ahimsa (1981).

In 1984, Mammootty starred as the smuggler Tharadas in I. V. Sasi's Athirathram and as a vengeful fisherman in Adiyozhukkukal, winning the Kerala State Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Following major critical and commercial successes in Balu Mahendra's Yathra (1985) and Joshiy's Nirakkoottu (1985), he achieved historic box office results with the 1987 revenge thriller New Delhi, scripted by Dennis Joseph.

During the late 1980s, Mammootty originated the role of Central Bureau of Investigation officer Sethurama Iyer in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988), launching one of Malayalam cinema's most enduring detective franchises. In 1989, he portrayed the folklore warrior Chandu Chekavar in Hariharan's epic Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, earning his first National Film Award for Best Actor. He secured another National Film Award for his dual performances in Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Mathilukal (1990) and Ponthan Mada (1993), alongside Vidheyan (1993).

Beyond Malayalam cinema, Mammootty expanded into major productions in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and English. In 1991, he starred alongside Rajinikanth in Mani Ratnam's Tamil classic Thalapathi. He later appeared in K. Viswanath's Telugu musical Swathi Kiranam (1992), Rajiv Menon's Tamil romance Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), and portrayed the title role of B. R. Ambedkar in Jabbar Patel's English-Hindi biographical film Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar (2000), which brought him another National Film Award for Best Actor.

His later career featured box office hits such as Rajamanikyam (2005), Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009), and Bheeshma Parvam (2022). He continued taking diverse character roles, earning critical acclaim as a single father in the Tamil drama Peranbu (2018), a policeman on election duty in Unda (2019), and a village resident in Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2022). In 2023, he headlined Jeo Baby's drama Kaathal - The Core, followed by Rahul Sadasivan's 2024 horror feature Bramayugam, which was chosen for a special screening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

In the 1980s, Mammootty co-founded Casino Productions alongside Mohanlal, I. V. Sasi, Seema, and Century Kochumon, producing films such as Gandhinagar 2nd Street and Nadodikkattu. He subsequently established distribution and production banners, including Playhouse and Mammootty Kampany. He also served as the chairman of Malayalam Communications, which oversees networks including Kairali TV and Kairali News, and authored the 2007 essay collection Kazhchapadu.

Outside the entertainment industry, Mammootty has led numerous charitable initiatives across Kerala. He acts as a patron for the Pain and Palliative Care Society in Kozhikode and the Care and Share International Foundation, which supports pediatric cardiac care through the Hridaya Sparsham project. He has also served as a goodwill ambassador for the Kerala government's Akshaya IT project and the Street India Movement.
