Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor married costume designer Sunita Bhavnani, also known as Sunita Kapoor, in 1984. They have two daughters, Sonam Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor, and a son, Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor.

Sonam Kapoor is an actress, Rhea Kapoor is a film producer, and Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor is an actor. Kapoor is the son of film producer Surinder Kapoor and Nirmal Kapoor, and his brothers include film producer Boney Kapoor and actor Sanjay Kapoor.

Kapoor first appeared on camera as a child actor in Tu Payal Mein Geet, playing a younger version of Shashi Kapoor's character. The film was not released theatrically. His Hindi film debut came with a brief role in Hamare Tumhare in 1979, followed by a lead role in the Telugu film Vamsa Vruksham in 1980. He later appeared in the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi, directed by Mani Ratnam, and played his first Hindi leading role in Woh 7 Din.

His breakthrough came with Yash Chopra's Mashaal in 1984, for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. The tapori character and stubble look he adopted for the role became closely associated with his early screen image. He followed it with films including Meri Jung, Karma, Mr. India, Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Parinda, and Eeshwar.

The title role in Shekhar Kapur's science-fiction film Mr. India established Kapoor as a major star, while his performance in Tezaab earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His comic performance in Chameli Ki Shaadi, the action films Janbaaz and Karma, and the song and dialogue associated with Ram Lakhan further defined his popularity during the 1980s.

Kapoor played twin brothers in the action comedy Kishen Kanhaiya and received critical praise for his performances in Awaargi, Lamhe, and Virasat. He won his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Beta in 1992. Other significant films from the decade included Laadla, 1942: A Love Story, Judaai, Deewana Mastana, Biwi No.1, and Taal.

For Taal, in which he played a zealous and crooked musical superstar, Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Pukar in 2000. His later roles in Nayak, No Entry, Welcome, and Race showed a gradual transition toward supporting and ensemble parts while retaining his comic and dramatic range.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Kapoor shared the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He also played a role in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol alongside Tom Cruise.

Kapoor played President Omar Hassan in the eighth season of the American action series 24. He later brought an Indian adaptation of the series to television, acquiring the rights and producing 24: India. In the Hindi version, he played Jai Singh Rathod, the Indian counterpart to Jack Bauer.

He entered film production with Badhaai Ho Badhaai in 2002, in which he also acted. His producing credits include My Wife's Murder, Gandhi, My Father, Short Kut: The Con Is On, Aisha, No Problem, Khoobsurat, Veere Di Wedding, Fanney Khan, and Thank You for Coming. Gandhi, My Father received the National Film Award for Special Jury Award or Special Mention.

His later acting credits include Dil Dhadakne Do, Welcome Back, Mubarakan, Race 3, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Total Dhamaal, Malang, AK vs AK, Thar, Jugjugg Jeeyo, Animal, Fighter, and Savi. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Dil Dhadakne Do and again for Jugjugg Jeeyo.

Kapoor has also occasionally worked as a playback singer. His credited songs include material from Chameli Ki Shaadi, Woh 7 Din, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai, and Tashan. In 1986, he released the album Welcome as a co-singer with Salma Agha, with music scored by Bappi Lahiri.
