Lorenzo Musetti

Musetti and his partner Veronica Confalonieri welcomed their first son, Ludovico, in March 2024. Their second son, Leandro, was born in November 2025.

Musetti has said that becoming a father changed his mentality around tennis. He connected the birth of his first child with greater motivation in training and with his semifinal appearance at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships and his Olympic bronze medal in Paris.

Musetti began playing tennis at four and was coached by Simone Tartarini from childhood. He trained through Italian federal programs and later worked at the Tirrenia Technical Centre. Roger Federer was his childhood tennis idol, and Musetti has linked his admiration for Federer to his decision to use a one-handed backhand.

His junior career included a doubles victory at Les Petits As in 2016 with Lorenzo Rottoli and several ITF junior titles. He was runner-up in the boys' singles event at the 2018 US Open, then won the 2019 Australian Open boys' singles title by defeating Emilio Nava in a final-set tiebreak. He reached the world No. 1 junior ranking in June 2019.

Musetti made his ATP Tour main-draw debut at the 2020 Dubai Tennis Championships after receiving a wildcard and qualifying. Later that year, at the Italian Open in Rome, he defeated three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka and former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori. He became the first player born in 2002 to win an ATP match and subsequently reached his first ATP semifinal at the Forte Village Sardegna Open.

In 2021, Musetti became the youngest player to break into the top 100 after reaching the semifinals of the Mexican Open in Acapulco. During that run he defeated Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov. He also reached the fourth round of the 2021 French Open on his Grand Slam debut, taking a two-set lead against Novak Djokovic before retiring in the fifth set.

Musetti won his first ATP title at the 2022 Hamburg European Open, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final. He became the youngest Italian player to defeat a top-10 opponent in an ATP final. Later that year he won the Tennis Napoli Cup, defeating fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini without dropping a set, and reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal at the Paris Masters after beating Casper Ruud.

He defeated Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters and was part of Italy's Davis Cup-winning teams in 2023 and 2024. At Wimbledon in 2024, he defeated Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals to reach his first major semifinal. He then won the men's singles bronze medal at the Paris Olympics by defeating Félix Auger-Aliassime, becoming the first Italian tennis player in 100 years to win an Olympic tennis medal.

Musetti reached the semifinals of the 2025 French Open after defeating Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe, and he made the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments by reaching the 2026 Australian Open quarterfinals. His 2025 season also included a run to the Monte-Carlo Masters final, a semifinal at the Italian Open, a top-10 debut and his first US Open quarterfinal.

Musetti is an all-court player who combines baseline counterpunching with drop shots, slices, topspin, volleys and serve-and-volley tactics. His one-handed backhand is a defining feature of his game, and he uses it both for topspin attacks and defensive slices. He has described clay as his favourite surface and the forehand as his favourite shot.

He won his first ATP doubles title at the 2026 Hong Kong Open with Lorenzo Sonego. Musetti was named Italian Sportsman of the Year by Gazzetta dello Sport for 2025 and received Italy's CONI Golden Collar of Sports Merit in 2023 and 2024.
