Jennifer Coolidge

Coolidge was raised in Norwell, Massachusetts. As a child, she played the clarinet and attended orchestra camp for three summers, while also developing an interest in acting and comedy. She attended Norwell High School, the Cambridge School of Weston, Emerson College, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

During her early acting years, Coolidge joined the Gotham City improv group in New York before moving to Los Angeles and becoming a long-running member of The Groundlings comedy troupe. While studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she worked as a waitress alongside Sandra Bullock at a New York venue. Coolidge initially hoped to become a dramatic actress similar to Meryl Streep, but ultimately built her career as a comedic character actress.

Coolidge made her television debut in the 1993 Seinfeld episode "The Masseuse," playing Jodi, a masseuse who dates Jerry. She followed the appearance with a regular role on the sketch comedy series She TV and later worked as a cast member and writer on Saturday Night Special. Her early screen work also included Not of This Earth, Trial and Error, Plump Fiction, A Night at the Roxbury, and recurring voice work on King of the Hill.

Her background in improv helped shape a performance style built around sharp timing, unusual vocal choices, sexual innuendo, and a willingness to play vain or unappealing characters. In 1995, she unsuccessfully auditioned for Saturday Night Live, but continued developing her comedy through television, film, and The Groundlings.

Coolidge's breakthrough came in 1999 when she played Jeanine Stifler, better known as Stifler's mom, in American Pie. She reprised the role in American Pie 2, American Wedding, and American Reunion. In 2001, she also began playing Paulette Bonafonté Parcelle, an expressive manicurist, in Legally Blonde and its sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. Paulette's friendship with Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, became one of Coolidge's best-known comic relationships on screen.

Her other prominent film roles during this period included Fiona, the self-absorbed stepmother in A Cinderella Story, Ireenie in Pootie Tang, and Aunt Fanny in the animated film Robots. She also appeared in Best in Show, Down to Earth, American Dreamz, Click, Date Movie, and Epic Movie. Coolidge collaborated with director Christopher Guest on Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, and later Mascots.

On television, she played Joey Tribbiani's agent Roberta "Bobbie" Morganstern in Joey, appearing in 37 episodes over two seasons. She also made notable appearances in Friends, Frasier, Sex and the City, According to Jim, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

In 2011, Coolidge began performing stand-up comedy after a successful appearance at a Women in Film event. She then took her act on the road for two years, performing internationally as part of her Yours for the Night tour. That same year, she joined 2 Broke Girls as Sophie Kachinsky, a Polish upstairs neighbor of the show's central characters. The recurring role became a main-cast part, and she appeared in the series through its cancellation in 2017.

Coolidge continued to work in film, television, voice acting, and theater during the decade. Her credits included Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Mascots, The Emoji Movie, and roles on Nip/Tuck, Party Down, Gravity Falls, and The Loud House. Her 2018 appearance as Paulette in Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" music video introduced her to a new generation of viewers and brought renewed attention to her earlier work.

Coolidge received major critical recognition for playing Tanya McQuoid, an eccentric and troubled wealthy woman, in the first two seasons of HBO's The White Lotus. The role reunited her professionally with Mike White, who had previously worked with her on Gentlemen Broncos. White wrote Tanya with Coolidge in mind, and the character became the central continuing presence between the show's Hawaii and Sicily settings.

For her performance, Coolidge won Primetime Emmy Awards for both a limited or anthology series and a drama series, as well as a Golden Globe for the second season. She also received awards from the Critics Choice Association and other organizations. In 2023, she appeared on the Time 100 list, hosted the Time 100 gala, and was named Woman of the Year by Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals.

Her later screen work includes Promising Young Woman, in which she played the concerned mother of Carey Mulligan's character, as well as Single All the Way, Shotgun Wedding, The Watcher, We Have a Ghost, Riff Raff, and A Minecraft Movie. She executive produced and starred in Riff Raff as Ruth, a role she described as a departure from the wealthy or spoiled characters she had often played.
