Hasan Piker

Hasan Doğan Piker was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and was raised in Istanbul and Ankara after his family moved back to Turkey shortly after his birth. He was raised as a Muslim and grew up speaking Turkish and English. He has described his childhood interests as including fashion, Hollywood, television, and American literature, and has characterized himself as being closely connected to American culture from an early age.

Piker attended school in Turkey before returning to the United States for higher education. He initially attended the University of Miami and then transferred to Rutgers University, where he joined Theta Delta Chi. He graduated cum laude in 2013 with a double major in political science and communication studies.

During his senior year at Rutgers, Piker interned at The Young Turks, the progressive news network co-founded by his uncle, Cenk Uygur. After graduating, he moved to the Los Angeles area and worked in the network's advertising, business, and sales departments. He later became a host and producer after asking to fill in on the program.

In 2016, Piker created and hosted The Breakdown, a political video series that presented left-leaning analysis for a millennial audience, including commentary aimed at supporters of Bernie Sanders. The program aired on Facebook, and Piker also contributed political writing to HuffPost from 2016 to 2018. He later hosted Agitprop with Hasan Piker on The Young Turks' YouTube channel.

Piker began streaming on Twitch on March 23, 2018, while he was still working at The Young Turks. He used the platform to reach a younger audience and to provide left-wing political commentary in a livestream format. His content expanded beyond politics to include gameplay, reactions, memes, and discussions of current events.

Piker left The Young Turks in January 2020 to pursue streaming full time. His YouTube channels developed around highlights from his Twitch broadcasts, political analysis, and gaming content. He also appeared on programs including The Issue Is and the political podcast Chapo Trap House.

Piker became one of Twitch's most-watched political livestreamers during the 2020 presidential election period. More than 125,000 viewers watched his commentary on the first presidential debate, while his election-night broadcast peaked at about 230,000 concurrent viewers. His coverage of the January 6 Capitol attack reached approximately 231,000 viewers.

In October 2020, Piker joined Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Pokimane, and other streamers for an Among Us broadcast tied to a voter-participation initiative. The stream attracted nearly 700,000 concurrent viewers. Piker was later given credentialed access to livestream from the 2024 Democratic National Convention, and his 2024 election-night coverage drew 7.5 million viewers.

His broadcasts have also brought recurring moderation controversies. Twitch issued a short-term ban after his 2019 comments about the September 11 attacks, and he received a one-week suspension in 2021 after using the term "cracker" in reference to white people. He has also faced criticism over his political commentary on Israel and Palestine, China, and other international issues.

Piker has used his online platform to support progressive political candidates and to bring campaign discussions to younger internet audiences. He supported Bernie Sanders during his 2016 and 2020 presidential primary campaigns and has criticized both major U.S. political parties while advocating for a more progressive Democratic Party.

During the 2025 New York City mayoral election, Piker supported Zohran Mamdani, who appeared on his stream. Piker's past remarks were later used by opponents of Mamdani in political attacks, and Mamdani criticized those remarks during a televised debate. Piker also appeared at campaign events and hosted candidates including Chris Rabb, Adam Hamawy, Saikat Chakrabarti, Melat Kiros, and Abdul El-Sayed.

Piker has used gaming and political livestreams to raise money for disaster relief and humanitarian causes. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he partnered with CARE International and raised more than $200,000 while streaming Elden Ring and discussing the conflict.

After the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake, Piker organized a fundraiser that was promoted by creators including Jacksepticeye, Valkyrae, Ludwig Ahgren, and IShowSpeed. The drive raised more than $1.2 million for relief organizations, including CARE International's Turkish and Syrian branches, the AKUT Search and Rescue Association, and Ahbap. His channel also raised more than $1 million for Palestinian humanitarian organizations during the Gaza war.

Since 2021, Piker has co-hosted the podcast Fear&, formerly known as Fear&Malding, with Will Neff. QTCinderella and AustinShow joined the podcast as co-hosts in 2022. The program gives Piker a setting for longer and more informal conversations alongside his political livestreams.

Piker also co-hosted the left-leaning political podcast Leftovers with Ethan Klein from September 2021 to October 2023. His online work has earned recognition from the Streamy Awards, the Streamer Awards, the Shorty Awards, the Webby Awards, and theScore esports Awards. He won Streamy Awards in the News category in 2020, 2022, and 2023.

Piker is commonly identified as a leftist, socialist, and Marxist. He has advocated for workplace democracy, universal health care, LGBTQ+ rights, gun control, Muslim rights, intersectional feminism, sustainable energy initiatives, and social and economic justice. He has also described himself as an anti-Zionist and an advocate for Palestinian emancipation.

His political commentary focuses on U.S. politics, foreign policy, capitalism, authoritarianism, and international conflicts. He has attributed part of his interest in politics to growing up in Turkey during the premiership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. His influences include Amy Goodman, Jon Stewart, Aaron McGruder, and Bill Burr, whose political and comedic styles have shaped aspects of his broadcasts.
